It appears as if Heroes of the Storm’s time in the sun has coming to an end. Blizzard has announced its MOBA is now entering what is effectively a legacy mode. A large number of Heroes of the Storm developers are now being moved onto other Blizzard projects and a handful will remain to work on themed events and new heroes.
If you were going to bank on one studio to topple the mighty behemoths that are League of Legends and DOTA 2 in the MOBA arena, then it would undoubtedly be Blizzard. Everything it touches turns into a glittering mount of gold pieces, ready to be spent on a menagerie of Great Green Dragon Turtle mounts and a real-life Zerg army.
No doubt every Tom, Dick and Thrall has managed to wangle a beta invite at some point or other, but Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm has now officially launched, so you can all get involved just by giving it a download.
Blizzard has revealed a brand new character coming to Heroes of the Storm, its in-house MOBA with a cast of iconic figures pulled from its range of franchises. The latest combatant to sign up is Diablo 3’s Crusader, the iron brute added as part of the Reaper of Souls expansion pack.
Blizzard has announced Heroes of the Storm, its eagerly anticipated stab at the MOBA genre, will be officially launching on June 2nd, following an open beta set to run from May 19th.
Blizzard probably felt a little cheesed off when the fan-made DOTA mod for Warcraft 3 became such a humongous success. Well, they probably felt alright until Valve came along and scooped up the creator IceFrog and set him to work on a sequel, creating one of the most popular eSports titles on the planet in the process.
Blizzard’s upcoming MOBA Heroes of the Storm is currently in Technical Alpha, but so far only those in North America have been invited to participate in the Alpha testing stage.
Blizzard isn’t exactly known for mixing things up when it comes to new IPs. Even when it does announce completely new titles - as it did this year with both Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft - it can’t resist throwing in all the familiar faces from its old and beloved franchises, be it the Warcraft universe, Diablo or StarCraft.
From knowing practically nothing about Blizzard’s upcoming MOBA Heroes of the Storm three days ago, we now have a pretty hefty bank of knowledge about the title, including playable characters, a cinematic trailer, and information from the developers themselves.
Blizzard has, once again, renamed its hotly anticipated upcoming MOBA.
