EA is currently running a promotion where they’ll give you a month of free EA Origin Access if you sign up for two-factor authentication on your Origin account. That’s how seriously they’re taking account security these days.
Oh, hang on, perhaps not. EA has opened up registration for its FIFA 20 Global Series eSports competition, only they’ve accidentally pre-populated the sign-up page with the personal details of players who’ve already done so. Is Electronic Arts a company we should be trusting with our personal information or not, we really can’t tell now.
EA’s sign-up form was accidentally dishing out the details of random accounts, including email addresses, Origin IDs, dates of birth, country of residence, and any console accounts linked. Good job EA.
While it seems fairly scatter-gun whose details were shared, there are reports from amateur players as well as high-profile FIFA eSports professionals who’ve had sensitive data leaked.
For their part, EA has taken down the FIFA 20 Global Series sign-up page while they investigate the issue.
“We're aware of a potential issue affecting the registration page for the EA SPORTS FIFA 20 Global Series that went live earlier today,” wrote EA Sports FIFA’s Twitter account. “We take these matters seriously, and we immediately took down the page while we investigate the matter. We'll share updates as soon as possible.”
We are now acutely aware of just why EA is so invested in everyone signing up for two-factor authentication. The systems are broken so every barrier you can put up between your data and other users is probably a good thing. It won't do anything to help with cock-ups like this but you can never have too much cybersecurity.
It therefore comes heartily recommended you take advantage of EA;s Login Verification deal. From now until the end of October, you get a free month of Origin Access Basic for adding 2FA. This includes access to games like Anthem, Battlefield V, Burnout Paradise Remastered, and Madden NFL 19. Add 2FA and you’ll get your free month of Origin Access from November 1st, 2019.
