And another one bites the dust. The eagerly anticipated Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries will now be arriving as an Epic Games Store exclusive.

The Mechwarrior series was a PC gaming juggernaut back in its heyday so it certainly feels like a powerful play from Epic to wrench it off Steam and bring it to the Epic Games Store. In a slightly awkward turn of events, Piranha Games president Russ Bullock claimed just 10 days ago that there weren’t any plans to bring MechWarrior 5 to Epic’s store.

“Our partnership with Epic Games store allows us the opportunity to make sure MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries meets our internal goal of creating the best MechWarrior game possible,” said the team at Piranha Games. As a result of this, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries has now been pushed back a little and will be ready to launch on PC from December 10th, 2019.

If you happen to have pre-order any of three editions (Standard, Collector, and Ultimate) of MechWarrior 5 and you aren’t happy about it becoming an EGS exclusive then you have until September 1st to obtain a full refund. Players will receive a full cash refund although they will forfeit access to both the game and the closed beta test.

At least they’re offering refunds, to be honest, which is more than can be said of Shenmue 3’s car crash of a Kickstarter campaign. If people were keen enough to pre-order MechWarrior 5 months before launch I can’t see why they wouldn’t just play the Epic Games Store version but I guess the hatred really does run deep with some folks.
