UPDATE: As if it ever needed confirming, a newly-leaked promotional trailer for Borderlands 3 has confirmed the Epic Store exclusivity on PC. Steam branding is conspicuous by its absence as publisher 2K/Take-Two have opted for the shiny pile of Epic cash.
The benefit to Gearbox and 2K will no doubt be a sweet cash deal, as well as not waiving the 5% royalty fee that would typically need to be paid to Epic for using Unreal Engine 4.
The trailer also confirms a September 13th release date for Borderlands 3, exactly as previously leaked.
With both Borderlands 3 and The Outer Worlds now timed exclusives on the Epic Store, it's abundantly clear Take-Two wants to throw its weight behind the store. The increased publisher cut is clearly speaking to them and we don't expect this attitude to change anytime soon.
Of course, this now raises some major questions about the future of Rockstar titles. Red Dead Redemption 2 will surely be in Epic's crosshairs, and Take-Two has demonstrated it's only too willing to make such a move.
Original Story: 02-Apr-2019 - It Looks as if Borderlands 3 is a Timed Epic Store Exclusive, Launches September 13th
We didn’t really want to start a Tuesday morning with news of a second big upcoming game that looks as if it’s going to be an Epic Store exclusive, but here we are. Borderlands 3 appears to be a timed Epic Store exclusive according to now-deleted tweets from the official Borderlands Twitter account.
Gearbox has said it’ll be ready to share more details about Borderlands 3 on April 3rd, although it seems some wayward tweet scheduling has let the cat out of the bag early. “Mayhem is Coming September 13. Pre-order now for the Gold Weapon Skins Pack!” read the first tweet.
A second, again now-deleted, advert, also contained a brief teaser clip for Borderlands 3 with the Epic Games Store logo displayed in the bottom-left corner.
Now, this doesn’t rule out Borderlands 3 coming to other stores, but there is no Steam logo and Epic’s past form with its aggressive approach to onboarding exclusives heavily hints Borderlands 3 will be an Epic Store exclusive.
Gearbox CEO has referenced the leaked tweets a bit cryptically, saying “2K/Take Two has exclusive publishing rights for Borderlands 3 and makes all decisions regarding price-points, territories, distribution and platform partnerships. Please direct all inquiries regarding any of those topics to 2K. We are *just* the talent.
“As a customer, I’m happy to shop in different stores - already do! I’ve bought games from Xbox, Playstation, Switch, Steam, Origin, GOG, Humble, Uplay, Epic and other stores. To me, exclusives are fine when they come w/ advantages and when they are short – say, six months :)”
Now, it doesn’t take much reading between the lines to understand Borderlands 3 is probably going to be exclusive to the Epic Store for six months, meaning it’ll come to Steam in March 2020.
On a side note, Pitchford also mentioned cross-platform multiplayer, so it sounds as if Borderlands 3 could end up one of those rare games which allow PC, PS4 and Xbox players to game together. “2K’s decisions aside, myself and the team at Gearbox have a very keen interest in cross-platform play,” wrote Pitchford. “We believe multi-platform support is a pre-requisite and Epic’s leadership with cross-platform support is helpful to our interests there.”
