Rockstar has dropped a jaw-dropping new trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2, showcasing 4K footage and focusing on the open-world and its inhabitants which form the backdrop of this Wild West adventure.

First things first, the environments are looking just stunning. Rockstar has trotted out the ‘living world’ trope once again, but it certainly appears to be on a scale that’s far larger than anything we saw in the original. It stretches from the snowy north all the way down south, filled with little settlements and towns occupied by unique NPCs.

Being a prequel to the original Red Dead Redemption, RDR2 follows Arthur Morgan and the Dutch Van der Linde gang as they trek across America, stealing and killing as they go. GTA 5’s style Heists appear to be in, although the gang will be forced to flee areas regularly and set up camp elsewhere. Here, the gang relax together and share stories, play games, and cause mischief.

Arthur can help out the gang by heading out to find food and supplies, with hunting becoming a more prominent gameplay feature. Carcasses can be taken to towns and sold, funding their misadventures.

Rockstar is also adopting new ways to interact with NPCs. Rather than characters being in simple passive/aggressive states, they may become suspicious, or antagonistic, or thankful. Confrontations can be defused. Characters can be beaten in order to be convinced to stay quiet. Player choice appears to be the order of the day here, and hopefully, there are going to be plentiful, and natural, ways of going about any particular mission.

This is just the first of Rockstar’s planned gameplay videos for Red Dead Redemption 2. Another upcoming trailer is going to take a look at mission structure, side activities, enemy gangs, robberies,

Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26th.
