After years of waiting, Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream has finally taken the wraps off its new adventure game. Detroit: Become Human is a PS4-exclusive sci-fi game set in, you guessed it, futuristic Detroit. Beginning life as a PS3 tech demo called KARA back in 2012, it’s since ballooned out into a full game. It centres around Kara, an android who has been brought to life and wishes to become human.
Detroit: Become Human promises to be about life, both artificial and human, and just what living means. So far, so very David Cage (founder of Quantic Dream). Cage claims it’s not just another story about AI however, but rather “what it means to be human and what it would be like to be in the shoes of an android discovering our world and their own emotions.” As you’d expect from a Quantic Dream title, Detroit: Become Human looks visually stunning in this debut trailer, with some truly top tier motion capture that helps bring the story to life.
As to how it plays, I’d expect it be along the lines of Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain, with limited interactivity and branching choices affecting the outcome. Hopefully the narrative takes inspiration from the latter rather than the former, which quickly deteriorated into a time-hopping mess.
