Looking for something better than Linux Mint - Cinnamon is starting to make me :-( - I can't believe I miss my Lubuntu setup. What full-fledged distro uses LXDE?
yeah you pretty much need to test them all yourself, though when you find the right fit its worth every second of your time ^^ (imho xfce ftw)
I like KDE most, XFCE is nice compromise for look&performance usable in audio studios for ex., LXDE is pretty awesome for very low resource usage being suitable for ancient hardware :)
+1, KDE is very complete ^^
KDE is kinda next-gen with all the nice visual effects while being well organized and simple enough to use, much better than Windows Aero or Mac OSx look :Ä
haha yeah i even switched my w7 to look like the old 98 so it wont hurt my brain that much ^^
Never tested the Mac layout… i dont see the OS in general that appealing to me (too broke to understand it? ^^"")
funny thing on Mac look is you have top window border as menu of the program at once, and also those close/min/max buttons are in left corner instead of right :Ä
There are also editions of Mint with MATE, KDE or Xfce. Try those! :)

Just switched to Cinnamon from Unity. Nice n light. Any more good DE suggestion for ubuntu?
imho Ubuntu isn't that good for at least a bit experienced user, Manjaro KDE is my favourite (Arch-Linux based) and if you like Cinnamon then also check LMDE (debian edition) of Linux Mint :Ä
for noobs like me ^^ Ubuntu based(deb) is the way to go if you want to ease up on your windows to linux transition ^^
(+1 for mint)
true, I remember I started with Xubuntu, then Lubuntu, then Ubuntu Studio, then Linux Mint, then ArtistX, then various Manjnaros and then almost all other Linux-based OSes and came back to Ubuntu Studio, then finally settled on Manjaro KDE variant :)
nice distro parkour! you sure have more exp than i do with the console then ^^ i remember using Mint 10 a lot when i started the Linux run then settled down with Backbox (gotta love the linux world, theres a dist tailored for anyone! ^^)
is Arch worth checking out though? heard a lot of good things about it but it seems kinda too advanced for an average guy…
Manjaro is kinda "arch for beginners", basically you'll have no problems with drivers and compatibility (wi-fi during installation is no-problem),
I like its pacman software, being better than Ubuntu software center, also packages tend to be more up to date because of faster rolling release distro type, just try "Live" from usb and you'll see, KDE is my favourite variant, but there's also XFCE and OpenBox variant :)
wooo xfce, is all i needed to hear ^^ will make sure to check it out on vm ^^ thx m8 for all the info
just check my blog I mentioned in post below ;))
already did ^^ and tested the manjaro on VM,
youre right the update center is much easier to manipulate though even if the whole system isnt that different from deb i kinda feel even noobier ^^ lol
Linux based Ubuntu?
hmm what? Ubuntu is Linux-based OS :)
oh, ok…do you know how good Ubuntu? can i play games? :)
Yes you can play games on Ubuntu. For example: Team Fortress, Luftrausers, System Shock 2 Salvation Prophecy etc. ;)
awesome, only free games and open source…?
Linux-based OSes don't support Direct by defualt, also the system is done completely different, so you cannot run .exe files at all, so by default you can play only Linux-designed games and install only Linux-based program installers;
there is a program called WINE which basically is support program to offer fake Windows and library for DirectX, NETframework, MS VisualC++ and such - that way I could run many Windows games (Witcher 2, NFS: Most Wanted 2005, Burnout Paradise…)

Also, Steam has a native Linux client, and they have ported many of their games to run natively on Linux.
soo, which one is your favourite Linux distro?
Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon here :)
All Ubuntu recent versions and Fedora after 16 are good enough for me.
I have issues with all recent 64bit *buntus, GRUB failing to create and setup boot sector :/
Just a question, Which would be the best alternative to Windows? I used Ubuntu 13.xx and was really impressed by it. Used Linpus Lite and man it was unusable :/
Ubuntu generally have the best UI. But Fedora and Redhat may serve you well too.
Linux Mint 16 is my favourite,
but Kubuntu is great too :Ä
I will take a look at it! It looks like Fedora is celebrating its Tenth Anniversary :)
BTW Anyone here try Chromium OS? :D
