Today's review of the gaming Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop explores the performance to value relationship of its hardware components. We will be comparing some of the most demanding games to see some expected frame rates for the Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop and understand the type of price to performance on offer.
Is the Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Not for gaming
Processor - The processor we find in this laptop can meet modern AAA game requirements with ease, making it an excellent 2020 laptop gaming choice for CPU. AAA games often need extra cores to run smoothly and minimise bottleneck. This laptop processor has 6 cores, which is excellent for modern gaming.
Graphics Card - The graphics solution contained in this laptop is not for gaming in 2020. It will struggle with most of the AAA titles that are released. The GPU in this laptop comes with 4GB of VRAM. This is an OK amount of VRAM but even some of today’s newer games will struggle to run. If you are after a gaming machine then perhaps look around for another laptop with more VRAM.
System Memory - The 8GB system memory in this machine is a good gaming amount of RAM for a 2020 laptop.
Screen Size - This laptop screen size is capable of meeting 2020 gaming, making it a step closer to being a good laptop for gamers. Larger laptop screens normally equal less squinting at on screen text, providing the resolution is set inline with the screens native pixel count. We normally look to the 17 inch panels for focused gaming laptops, but this 15.6" screen is the most common and popular in the market, due to portability versus viewability. Look for 17 inch laptops, if you want a gaming laptop with a suitable viewing area. But the larger laptop means you compromise on portability.
Refresh Rate - Refresh rates can be hard to see, when the laptop reseller doesn't make it clear. Assume 60Hz if this is the case. Ideally for a gaming laptop you want 120Hz. This means the games you run can get up to 120 frames per second, assuming the hardware inside them is powerful enough to deliver that FPS. The refresh rate caps a games deliverable FPS even if the hardware can deliver more FPS than the Hz. The top panel refresh rate for this laptop is 60Hz which is ok but not really your first choice, if you want a good gaming laptop. Look for panels that we mark as good or excellent if you think this laptop hardware can get higher than 60FPS on most modern games.
A key choice in any gaming laptop is making sure we identify the right graphics card in the laptop and know what it is capable of in today's gaming landscape. With this laptop we are taking a closer look at how its total laptop value compares to its capability when it comes to running modern demanding games. Also lets take a look at it when running modern popular games like, Cyberpunk 2077 or Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in ultra graphics settings on its native screen resolution of 1080p. The GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile card that's powering the Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop, when compared to today’s top 500 most demanding games, can run 310 at min system specs and will run 0 games when comparing to their increased recommended system requirements.
We really want to see how the Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 will compare across all permutations of the Nitro 5 2020 model range. This will give us a good sense of how well it sits in terms of cost to performance within its own lineup, and will better help us decide if this laptop represents good value to us today.
We currently give the Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop a 10 out of 10 for its P2P score. Where the higher the better rating. As mentioned the figure will adjust as new hardware is released and performance expectations shift over time. This Nitro 5 2020 configuration is placed at 4th position, when we order the range by their price to performance ratings. Those getting closer to the 1st position in this list will be better gaming laptops for their price.

It currently offers 27% worse rating when comparing its price to performance rating against the best laptop available today for price to performance, which is the ASUS TUF A15 R7 4800H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2, which currently costs $986.99. Another one to consider is the 2nd placed Price to Performance laptop, the MSI GF65 Thin i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2. This one has a price listed as $922.94 and our laptop gets 21% worse against its price to performance rating.
If you are looking for a strong CPU focused laptop then let's compare this Nitro 5 2020 laptop with the top CPU performance focused laptop available today and see how it compares. A suitable comparison laptop that is CPU focused is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 R9 4900HS RTX 2060 Mobile 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 1440p. This represents one of the laptops for the current cheapest price with the most powerful CPUs in it today. It has the Ryzen 9 4900HS 8-Core 3.0GHz processor tucked inside it which can deliver 33% better performance when compared to our CPU, Ryzen 5 4600H 6-Core 3.0GHz which is found in this review laptop.
The Ryzen 5 4600H 6-Core 3.0GHz processor found in this machine can currently run 484 games of the top 500 most demanding games right now. This is basically how many recommended game system requirements our laptop cpu beats in performance today, but we will update this figure as new games come out. This is 500 games when looking at beating minimum system requirements.
Recommended processor requirements for modern games increase all the time, so we thought we would compare the performance of our laptop CPU to some popular games of today. First off there is Assassins Creed: Valhalla and our laptop CPU delivers 27% better performance compared to that game’s requirement. Next we have Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in which we see our laptop processor has 24% better performance compared to the game's CPU specs. And then there is 48% better performance when we put our laptop cpu against Cyberpunk 2077 recommended specs.
Wondering how strong this laptop is in the GPU department, then let's have a look at it compared to one of the current best GPU performing laptops available today and this should show us the relative graphics performance of our review model. A good laptop to compare against, that is GPU focused, would be the MSI GT76 Titan i9-10900K RTX 2080 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 4K. This showcases one of the laptops for the current cheapest price, while still housing one of the most powerful laptop GPUs. It comes with a GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB graphics card slotted inside it, which can deliver 157% better performance when compared to our GPU, GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile from our review laptop.
Currently 0 games of the top 500 most demanding games today (recommended graphics requirements) can run on the review laptop’s GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile. Or 310 games of the top 500 most demanding for minimum GPU specs can run on it.
When compared to the recommended graphics requirements of the most popular games today, like Cyberpunk 2077 our laptop GPU is 40% worse in performance. Compared to Assassins Creed: Valhalla our laptop graphics performance is 40% worse.
With a 1080p native screen panel our Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 has a 15.6" physical screen size. This inch panel size is measured starting in one corner, say the top corner and then across the middle of the screen down to the bottom corner on the other side. And in our case it has a fixed number of pixels in that screen that are 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall, or 1080p resolution. The refresh rate of a 4K laptop panel is often 60Hz. This figure sets a 60 frames per second cap that locks a game to no matter the capability of the hardware in the 4K laptop. However, today’s AAA games, when running at Ultra graphics settings and 4K resolution, usually require hardware that we don't see in laptops or desktops to even reach that 60FPS cap. The Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop’s monitor can be picked up with 60Hz refresh rate versions.
It would be more likely that we would have to lower the AAA game resolution to 1080p or maybe 1440p and by doing so get back some of the FPS to a playable level. But by doing this the game moves away from its native 4K resolution and starts to look unclear. But if the laptop does have the hardware to run today's AAA titles at 4K resolution, a normal sized portable PC comes with a 15 or 17 inch panel. This might not be physically big enough to make the most of the splendors of your game. It would of course look great still, but perhaps a dedicated monitor for your desk, one that isnt 60Hz restricted would accommodate that gaming scenario.
If you stream 4K content, films, services like Netflix then perhaps the quality of 4K resolution on a 17inch panel would be better than the 1080p alternative that the majority of laptops provide.
At the moment our advice would be, stick to the 1080p laptop panels for now. Your laptop remains portable and 4K laptop’s just aren't quite there yet. The 4K needs to be a no brainer but at the moment you will still have to lower resolution in game to get playable but sub par visuals that still can't raise above 60FPS.
A well priced 1440p gaming monitor with 144Hz, is the AOC CQ32G1 32 inch 144Hz 1ms curved, which is currently priced at $319.99 and would work well with our Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop. For extra price trend information on this desktop 1440p monitor, it reached its lowest tracked price on 1st Mar 2020, where it would cost $299.99.
Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz is a good value, high performing desktop display that might work well with this laptop. It's currently priced up at $829.99 and also has a 144Hz refresh rate. Helping us to round out our information for this 4k monitor we can see it reached a low price on 13th Nov 2020, we noted the low price at $549.99.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
Possibly a suitable purpose for a 4K laptop would be if you were keen to watch 4K streaming services like Netflix. At which point perhaps it's enough of a selling point for you to consider a 4K laptop?
Hold that 4K gaming laptop cash for perhaps a more powerful GPU or fancy mouse or headset. That's our usual advice. Otherwise it might be a bit disheartening to pay for a 4K gaming laptop, and then be forced to turn the resolution down on modern games to get them to run smoothly.
