Gaming laptops are often expensive when compared to similar specced desktops. So today’s ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 R9 4900HS RTX 2060 Mobile 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 1440p laptop review will be focusing on helping us demystify it’s performance capability in relation to its price. We will take a look at some of the latest demanding games to see the types of FPS returns we could expect to see for this mobile gaming price point.
Is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 R9 4900HS RTX 2060 Mobile 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 1440p good as a gaming laptop? Good
Processor - An excellent CPU for running AAA game requirements, especially during the 2021 gaming year. It will be solid for some time to come as well. The 8 cores that this processor has is excellent and very capable for today and future AAA gaming.
Graphics Card - The GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile is certainly a good gaming graphics card for a 2021 laptop. The GPU in this laptop comes with 6GB of VRAM. This is a good amount for today’s AAA games.
System Memory - An excellent amount of system memory, the 16GB is capable of running AAA titles during the 2021 gaming year and we would expect beyond that as well.
Screen Size - This laptop screen, which is 14.0", can deliver viewable modern game releases, but its size, is a little on the small size for a gaming laptop, making it OK for more casual gamers. You could go larger, of course, but then the larger you go the less portable a laptop becomes. For gaming laptops that are still portable, we would go for 17 inch gaming laptops.
Refresh Rate - Refresh rates can be hard to see, when the laptop reseller doesn't make it clear. Assume 60Hz if this is the case. Ideally for a gaming laptop you want 120Hz. This means the games you run can get up to 120 frames per second, assuming the hardware inside them is powerful enough to deliver that FPS. The refresh rate caps a games deliverable FPS even if the hardware can deliver more FPS than the Hz. So with those thoughts in mind and how the refresh rate impacts gaming, the review laptop has an ok refresh rate available to it. The 60Hz is certainly not great though, and if your hardware can deliver better FPS than the refresh rate, then perhaps shop around for a better refresh rate panel.
Getting the right graphics card for this mobile gaming machine will be one of our key focuses. As we know it can be tricky to break this down, but we will be looking at how this laptop hardware can run across demanding and popular modern games and therefore how well the price of the machine stacks up against other gaming laptops. A few of the modern demanding or popular games we will be looking at will be, Cyberpunk 2077, Assassins Creed: Valhalla and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Seeing how these games run on the laptops native 1440p resolution at ultra will certainly give us something tangible to consider and compare from. This laptop has the GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile in it. It's worth noting that the very best P2P model has a recorded price of $909.00 to consider and of course this is purely a value for performance basis. Games these days have a range of processor requirements so let's look at a few popular games of today, and check our laptop CPU against the games recommended requirement. First off, Cyberpunk 2077 and our laptop processor gets 61% better performance rating. Next we have Assassins Creed: Valhalla where our CPU gets 45% better performance and finally another popular title at the moment is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which has a performance difference of : 43% better, when put against our laptop’s Ryzen 9 4900HS 8-Core 3.0GHz.
