How well can the GeForce GT 740 run games
2 Aug 2020 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce GT 740 is a very low performing piece of gaming hardware and can probably only run indie system requirements. DirectX 12 gaming system requirements will be met by this gpu.

How many years will the GeForce GT 740 graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GT 740 in your PC? You should definitely consider replacing this GeForce GT 740 graphics card, if it is still in your gaming PC.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GT 740? Upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB which is 755% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 852 games from the most demanding games today. Alternatively if you are thinking of upgrading this graphics card then we would currently suggest the R-500 Series Radeon RX 580 8GB. This PC hardware upgrade performs 597% better and can run 789 of today’s 1000 most demanding PC games.

GeForce GT 740 Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GT 740 is a Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the first revision of the Kepler Architecture.

Architecture
The Kepler Architecture was NVIDIA's big step to power efficiency. Each Stream Multiprocessor (SMX) now hosts 192 Shader Processing Units - against the 48 of older Fermi Architecture, and has been redesigned being now clocked at the same speed of the Central Unit. This means they are more energy efficient and will consequently lead to cooler operating temperatures. However, it also means they are weaker. It can be said that one Fermi SMX is as fast as 2 Kepler SMXs.
Additionally, and not available in all GPUs, Kepler also introduced the Boost Clock Feature. The Boost Clock is an even higher Clock Speed activated when in gaming mode and becomes the effective speed of the GPU.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed GK107-425-A2 which has 2 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 993MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The Memory Clock Operates at 900MHz.

Features
DirectX 12.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for CUDA, OpenCL, DirectCompute, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX, Realtime Raytracing and other technologies

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 64W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and it relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
GeForce GT 740 is essentially a fast GeForce GT 640.
Gaming benchmarks indicate its performance is not too far from the older GeForce GTX 650.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i3) and 8GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GT 740.
