How well can the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB run games
26 Nov 2020 - Graphics card reviewed

A true powerhouse, the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB will run even the most demanding game system requirements released today. Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 12 requirement.

What FPS performance can the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB get on latest AAA 2020 games? In particular our game review looks at the FPS achieved running on Ultra graphics settings on the 1080p screen resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. In terms of performance against the most demanding games today this graphics card can play 999 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements.

With 1080p being the most common gaming resolution at the moment we explored how well the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB can run Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War at 1080p and saw it return strong frame rates at the following graphics settings - Low: 323 FPS, Medium: 255 FPS, High: 172 FPS and Ultra: 123 FPS. For performance contrast we can see that FIFA 21 returns a strong 346 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

Increasing resolution to 1440p is something a number of PC gamers are doing today. We tested the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB at 1440p with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which got a strong set of FPS results. These were, Low: 247 FPS, Medium: 194 FPS, High: 131 FPS and Ultra: 93 FPS. We then checked out FIFA 21 which had a set of graphics results as followed, L: 594FPS, M: 495FPS, H: 363FPS, U: 264FPS. And another popular game was Assassins Creed: Valhalla that returned L: 124FPS, M: 106FPS, H: 91FPS, U: 62FPS at 1440p. Getting popular modern games to run at 1440p on the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB is a solid performer with higher resolution modern gaming. This graphics card can also bump up to 4K gaming regularly with the latest games still being capable of high or ultra graphics settings at this level.

How many years will the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB in your PC? No graphics card upgrade required for 2 to 3 years of meeting top end game system requirements

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB? There are no graphics cards on the current market that would provide a big enough increase in performance to warrant upgrading the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB.

Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
The Radeon RX 6800 XT 12GB is an Enthusiast gaming Graphics Card based on the second (2.0) Revision of the RDNA Architecture.

Architecture
The Navi 22 GPU offers support for GDDR6 Memory, DirectX 12.0, Vulkan 1.0, and OpenGL 4.5.

This variant of the Navi 22 GPU features 40 Compute Units activated, offering 2560 Shader Processing Units, 160 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The GPU features a 1605 MHz base clock speed and up to 2500 MHz with boost clock. This puts its predicted performance roughly in line with the GeForce RTX 3070.

GPU
The Central Unit is clocked at 1605 MHz, rising to 2500 MHz with boost clock enabled.

Memory: Speed
The GPU is equipped with high-speed GDDR6 and accesses the Frame Buffer through a 256-bit memory interface, providing total memory bandwidth of 448 GB/s.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 12GB. Under most circumstances, this only proves useful in certain 3D Games whose Settings Require Large Amounts of Memory.
However, the GPU itself is aimed for 4K Gaming, In some limited scenarios, 12GB might be a bottleneck and Performance could be better were the Frame Buffer larger, however this would only be an issue in the most demanding games.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 170W, it requires at least a 600W PSU with two available 8-pin connectors.

Performance
AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 12GB competes with GeForce RTX 3070 8GB, which is available for $499.
Specs currently available suggest the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 12GB performance should be in the same region as the GeForce RTX 3070.

System Suggestions
AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 12GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 3840 x2160 (4K). For the most demanding AAA games it should be ideally suited to 4K. We recommend a Very Strong Processor and at least 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
