How well can the GeForce GTX 580M run games
28 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

A mid to low level graphics card, the GeForce GTX 580M is found in budget machines nowadays, struggling to meet AAA system requirements. Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 11 requirement.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 580M graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 580M in your PC? You should definitely consider replacing this GeForce GTX 580M graphics card, if it is still in your gaming PC.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 580M? A suitable upgrade choice for the GeForce GTX 580M is the 20 Series GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile, which is 388% more powerful and can run 982 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements. Alternatively if you are thinking of upgrading this graphics card then we would currently suggest the RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500M 8GB. This PC hardware upgrade performs 204% better and can run 590 of today’s 1000 most demanding PC games.

GeForce GTX 580M Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 580M is a High-End Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Fermi Architecture.

Architecture
The Fermi Architecture was first manufactured with a 40nm technology and uses a technique known as Hot Clocking: The Shaders are clocked twice as fast as the Central Unit. While this leads to a reasonable performance boost, it causes enormous amounts of energy dissipation, leading, ultimately, to a significantly higher operating temperature.
Fermi is also the first GPU architecture with fully cached memory access which increases memory performance.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed GF114 which has 8 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 64 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 620MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 750MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for SLI, Optimus, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX, Realtime Raytracing and other technologies

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 100W, it is only suited for very large laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance identical to a desktop GeForce GTX 560.

System Suggestions
We recommend a fast processor (Intel Core i7 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 580M.

Browsing the net revealed that some have got this card to OC 682/1364/1650 and even 713/1426/1725. When they've replaced the cooling on it, it goes as far as 785/1570/1900 but I really wouldn't suggest doing that…
