How well can the Radeon RX 550 2GB run games
14 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

A mid level piece of gaming hardware, this Radeon RX 550 2GB graphics card can still meet and run indie system requirements and some of the less demanding AAA games. DirectX 12 gaming system requirements will be met by this gpu.

How well will the Radeon RX 550 2GB run 2019 games? We will take a look at the biggest releases and frames per second analysis on Ultra graphics settings. In comparison to the game recommended requirements of the 1000 most demanding games played today this PC hardware can run 165.

First we looked at 1080p resolution for the Radeon RX 550 2GB performance to explore what sort of benchmarks it would achieve on the popular title Planet Zoo and saw it deliver weak frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 22 FPS, Medium: 18 FPS, High: 12 FPS and Ultra: 9 FPS. We proceeded to look at Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order to see how that compared and saw that it returned a weak 0 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

We move on to 1440p, and tested Planet Zoo which delivered weak FPS results. Here are the graphic presets - Low: 17 FPS, Medium: 13 FPS, High: 9 FPS and Ultra: 6 FPS. Next we have Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order running on Radeon RX 550 2GB which gets L: 0FPS, M: 0FPS, H: 0FPS, U: 0FPS. And for performance contrast the popular Need For Speed Heat gets L: 30FPS, M: 24FPS, H: 16FPS, U: 11FPS at 1440p. Gaming at 1440p with the Radeon RX 550 2GB is not going to be able to maintain a playable game at this resolution.

How many years will the Radeon RX 550 2GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon RX 550 2GB in your PC? Its time to start researching your next graphics card upgrade as the Radeon RX 550 2GB is failing to meet modern day gaming system requirements. A gpu AAA lifespan of around 6-12 months.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon RX 550 2GB? A good upgrade choice for this graphics card today would be the 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB. For comparison of the 1000 most demanding games around today this suggested upgrade is 124% better and can meet 897 of their recommended requirements. Alternatively a suitable upgrade choice for the Radeon RX 550 2GB is the RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500 4GB, which is 67% more powerful and can run 685 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements.

All of the NVIDIA products get up-to-date pages, but AMD products get left in the dust:

  • TDP is 75W
  • 512 shader processing units
  • 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs
  • 512 KB L2 Cache
  • Core speed is 1100 MHz, boosts up to 1183 MHz
  • 128-bit GDDR5 memory

Just realised that I made a mistake by re-stating that TDP is 75W; I meant to say 50W.

Does it actually take 50W or 75W? I'm planning on buying this for dirt cheap but with not the best PSU, A Corsair B1 400W can handle it right? With i3-2100 and 8GB of RAM?

It dissipates 50W of heat, so the actual consumption will probably be similar. Seeing as GPUs like the 750 Ti (60W) were used as straight upgrades to OEM PCs, your PSU should handle the RX 550 fine.
