How well can the Radeon RX 470 4GB run games
31 Oct 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

A strong performing piece of hardware, Radeon RX 470 4GB can still meet a lot of the game system requirements of modern games. Radeon RX 470 4GB is capable of DirectX 12 gaming requirements.

How well will the Radeon RX 470 4GB run 2019 games? We will take a look at the biggest releases and frames per second analysis on Ultra graphics settings. This graphics hardware can run 398 of the 1000 most demanding PC games played today.

Now onto the frame rates achieved at 1080p. We predict that Cyberpunk 2077 will get 14 FPS with the Radeon RX 470 4GB, Borderlands 3 getting 32 FPS and Zombieland: Double Tap - Road Trip getting 40 frames per second. All run on Ultra at 1920x1080 screen res.

Moving screen sizes up to 1440p we researched Cyberpunk 2077 on the Radeon RX 470 4GB and predict it will get a weak set of frame rates. Here are the low to ultra predictions at 1440p - L: 27FPS, M: 21FPS, H: 14FPS, U: 10FPS. Another popular game to test at 1440p with this card was Borderlands 3 which seemed weak in performance netting an Ultra FPS of 24 FPS. Finally we then took a look at Zombieland: Double Tap - Road Trip where its Ultra 1440p Frame rates were playable at 31 FPS. Getting popular modern games to run at 1440p on the Radeon RX 470 4GB is likely in need of some graphical option tweaks when trying to play modern games.

How many years will the Radeon RX 470 4GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon RX 470 4GB in your PC? Our current calculations suggest a graphics card upgrade will be required in around 12-18 months

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon RX 470 4GB? A good upgrade choice for this graphics card today would be the 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB. For comparison of the 1000 most demanding games around today this suggested upgrade is 58% better and can meet 901 of their recommended requirements. Alternatively upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the R-500 Series Radeon RX 580 4GB which is 20% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 706 games from the most demanding games today.

Radeon RX 470 4GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
The AMD RX 470 4GB graphics card is a 2016 released performance graphics card based on the third revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture. This card competes against Nvidia's outgoing, but very popular, GTX 970 and the incoming GTX 1050 Ti, when that releases.

Architecture
It is powered by the Ellesmere PRO GPU, which has 2048 shader processing units, 128 TMUs and 32 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 926MHz and goes up to 1206MHz, when boost mode is triggered.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 4GB frame buffer of GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface, while the memory clock Operates at 1650MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 120W, it requires at least a 400W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Performance
The AMD RX 470 has been built as a Mid/High performance graphics card for 2016. It will run most triple AAA titles released during 2016 on medium to high graphics at 1080p screen resolution. With adjustments and lowering anti aliasing this card can confidently maintain 60+ frames per seconds on high graphic settings at 1080p. Moving to 1440p screen resolution and the graphics card may need to be adjusted down to medium in order to maintain 50-60+ fps.
System Suggestions
The RX 470 is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a mid range processor and at least 8GB of system memory for optimal performance.

It will work fine. I don't know if your monitor is VGA, if it is, you'll maybe get a little trouble to make it work since there are no longer DVI-I ports on this card, so you can't use an adapter. But ya, it works on this resolution.

It has DVI-D, which is digital, there are two kinds of DVI, that's what I tried to explain. It needs an active adapter to port it from VGA.

It can handle it. In some heavy cpu games you may feel a little. But surely, no more than 2-3 fps loss compared to the i5 4440.

Sapphire cheaped out on the heatsink for this particular model. Solid aluminum, unlike the RX 480 Ref. which has a copper core. Needs undervolting to keep from melting and an increased power target to maintain advertised clocks.

Scores a 6.2 on SteamVR at stock clocks while paired with an i5-4590 and 16GB RAM.
