How well can the Radeon RX 480 8GB run games
14 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The Radeon RX 480 8GB is a high performing piece of gaming hardware, still confidently featuring in PC gamer computers. Radeon RX 480 8GB is capable of DirectX 12 gaming requirements.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the Radeon RX 480 8GB. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2019. In comparison to the game recommended requirements of the 1000 most demanding games played today this PC hardware can run 707.

With 1080p being the most common gaming resolution at the moment we explored how well the Radeon RX 480 8GB can run Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at 1080p and saw it return reasonable frame rates at the following graphics settings - Low: 135 FPS, Medium: 106 FPS, High: 71 FPS and Ultra: 51 FPS. For performance contrast we can see that Need For Speed Heat returns a reasonable 51 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

People are turning their increasingly more powerful graphics cards to the popular 1440p screen size so we tested the Radeon RX 480 8GB to see how it performs on 1440p. First off we have looked at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare where it was playable. The frame rates it scored for the game presets were - Low: 103 FPS, Medium: 81 FPS, High: 54 FPS and Ultra: 39 FPS. We added Need For Speed Heat to our tests and saw it was playable with a 39 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And then tested Borderlands 3 which got 34 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Running games at 1440p with a Radeon RX 480 8GB is a reasonable choice for most modern games at 1440p, but you may encounter some need to adjust graphics settings down from Ultra to High in some cases to improve gaming stability.

How many years will the Radeon RX 480 8GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon RX 480 8GB in your PC? Upgrade time for this GPU is currently placed at 2 years

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon RX 480 8GB? Are you looking to upgrade a Radeon RX 480 8GB? Then we would suggest getting a 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB, as it can run 897 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today with 29% increased graphics performance. An alternative great upgrade graphics card would be a R-500 Series Radeon RX Vega 56 8GB, which has 39% better performance and can run 961 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today.

You need one 8-pin connector to hook up to the RX 480, and check the amps that your power supply delivers over the 12V rail from its labelling sticker. If you have an 8 pin connector and it is at least 33 amps, then you are fine.

GPU's work on every pci-e mobo. Just checked yours and as long as your psu can support it you are fine. Keep in mind that it can draw up to 170 W. Also make sure you install it on x16 slot for optimal performance

Yes, i7 and RX480 will do well in pretty much any game or application you could use. However, the i7 cost/performance ratio isn't necessarily ideal, and I would recommend a cheaper i5-6500 and graduating to a GTX 1070, at least for gaming.
