How well can the Radeon R9 390 MSI Gaming 8GB Edition run games
12 Jan 2020 - Graphics card reviewed

While some games have more powerful requirements than this GPU, the Radeon R9 390 MSI Gaming 8GB Edition is only really challenged by the most demanding games released today, but normally it is more than capable of running games with a stable frame rate at 1080p. Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 12 requirement.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the Radeon R9 390 MSI Gaming 8GB Edition. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2020. In terms of performance against the most demanding games today this graphics card can play 523 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements.

The Radeon R9 390 MSI Gaming 8GB Edition graphics card is predicted to return a weak performance on Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p of 24 frames per second at Ultra graphics settings. Another popular title that is good to benchmark graphics cards against is Grand Theft Auto VI which we predict will get weak frame rates of 19 FPS. A third game we can look at on Ultra at 1080p is the popular Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order, which was getting 25 FPS under tests.

One of the growing popular screen resolutions for PC gaming is the wider 1440p. So we wanted to see how well the Radeon R9 390 MSI Gaming 8GB Edition performed at 1440p by taking a look at some of the current popular games. First we looked at Cyberpunk 2077 and predict it will deliver weak frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 47 FPS, Medium: 37 FPS, High: 25 FPS and Ultra: 18 FPS. We then checked the performance on Grand Theft Auto VI to predict if that will run well. It is predicted to be weak with a 14 FPS at Ultra 1440p. 1440p Radeon R9 390 MSI Gaming 8GB Edition PC gaming is going to need to lower its graphics settings to medium on modern games.

How many years will the Radeon R9 390 MSI Gaming 8GB Edition graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon R9 390 MSI Gaming 8GB Edition in your PC? No graphics card upgrade required for around 2 years

The main question, as always…will my CPU bottleneck this card? If so, what card would you recommend for an upgrade?

I am attempting to upgrade to this gpu, yet on my AsRock Fatal1ty 970 mobo, with an fx 8350 OC'd to 5.2ghz it gets seriously slowed down on games.

I got 75fps on CineBench with it, and my GTX 660ti got 107Fps
Any suggestions since most my specifications are listed in my rigs specifications

970, about 25% faster…the only thing his GPU has over the 970 is the 8GB of VRAM, but 4GB of Vram is more than enough for 1080p

25%????wow is this 980 ti?970 is 3-4 % better but only in pappers as all the reviews say..it has 8 vs 3,5 vram(future).i wanted 970 gigabyte g1 but the ram issue held me back(huge for me cause i dont want to spend too much money that in 1-2 years cause of the ram lower the settings to high)..i want 3 years at least ultra -tweaked high.Only ACU -GTA and SOM use 3.4-3.8 at 1080p now but in 1 year?

Currently, I think the 390 is better. Due to the higher support it has got for the DX12, supporting Async Compute, that causes Nvidia suffer performance drops.
