31 Oct 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI is a high performing piece of gaming hardware, still confidently featuring in PC gamer computers. DirectX 12 gaming system requirements will be met by this gpu.

How well will the GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI run 2019 games? We will take a look at the biggest releases and frames per second analysis on Ultra graphics settings. This graphics hardware can run 704 of the 1000 most demanding PC games played today.

First we looked at 1080p resolution for the GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI performance to explore what sort of benchmarks it would achieve on the popular title The Outer Worlds and saw it deliver reasonable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 124 FPS, Medium: 98 FPS, High: 66 FPS and Ultra: 47 FPS. We proceeded to look at Need For Speed Heat to see how that compared and saw that it returned a reasonable 47 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

Increasing resolution to 1440p is something a number of PC gamers are doing today. We tested the GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI at 1440p with The Outer Worlds, which got a playable set of FPS results. These were, Low: 95 FPS, Medium: 75 FPS, High: 50 FPS and Ultra: 36 FPS. We then checked out Need For Speed Heat which had a set of graphics results as followed, L: 95FPS, M: 75FPS, H: 50FPS, U: 36FPS. And another popular game was Red Dead Redemption 2 that returned L: 95FPS, M: 75FPS, H: 50FPS, U: 36FPS at 1440p. In summary we feel the GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI running at 1440p is ok at playing most games but might need to have the graphics settings lowered to medium preset in some cases.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI in your PC? There is still 2 years of top end gaming left in this GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI? Upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB which is 32% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 900 games from the most demanding games today. Alternatively a good choice when looking to upgrade the GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI would be the R-500 Series Radeon RX Vega 56 8GB which meets 962 of the 1000 top game’s recommended system requirements and has 41% better performance.

GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 960 2GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM206-300-A1 which, together, offer 2048 Shader Processing Units, 128 TMUs and 64 ROPs, on a 256-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1127MHz and goes up to 1178MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.

Power Consumption
Power Consumption lies between 200W and 250W.

Performance
With Proper Driver Support, Gaming benchmarks prove that at 2560x1440, the best suited resolution, GeForce GTX 960 2GB SLI is slightly faster than GeForce GTX 970.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Strong Processor (Intel Core i7 Six Core/AMD FX Eight Core) and 8GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 960 4GB SLI.
