How well can the GeForce GTX 970M 3GB run games
28 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

This graphics card offers upper mid level gaming performance. The GeForce GTX 970M 3GB GPU could struggle if it was to try and run the most demanding games available today, but it meets a lot of game system requirements found in today’s games. GeForce GTX 970M 3GB is capable of DirectX 12 gaming requirements.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the GeForce GTX 970M 3GB. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2019. We look at 1000 of the most demanding games available today and this GPU is better than the recommended graphics requirement of more than 264 games in the list.

Now onto the frame rates achieved at 1080p. We are seeing The Outer Worlds getting 21 FPS with the GeForce GTX 970M 3GB, Halo: Reach getting 91 FPS and Cyberpunk 2077 predicted to get 0 frames per second. All run on Ultra at 1920x1080 screen res.

People are turning their increasingly more powerful graphics cards to the popular 1440p screen size so we tested the GeForce GTX 970M 3GB to see how it performs on 1440p. First off we have looked at The Outer Worlds where it was weak. The frame rates it scored for the game presets were - Low: 41 FPS, Medium: 33 FPS, High: 22 FPS and Ultra: 16 FPS. We added Halo: Reach to our tests and saw it was good with a 69 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And then researched Cyberpunk 2077 leading us to predict 0 FPS at Ultra 1440p. After a look at the popular games running at 1440p with the GeForce GTX 970M 3GB, this is a reasonable performance fit for this resolution. Some of the more resource intensive games may well need a few graphical tweak to get the most out of the graphics card at this increased resolution.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 970M 3GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 970M 3GB in your PC? 12-18 months of top end gaming is still left in this graphics card

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 970M 3GB? If you are thinking of upgrading this graphics card then we would currently suggest the 20 Series GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile. This PC hardware upgrade performs 134% better and can run 982 of today’s 1000 most demanding PC games. Alternatively if you want an upgrade suggestion for the GeForce GTX 970M 3GB then a good choice would be RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500M 8GB as this is better than 580 of the top 1000 most demanding game requirements with 45% better performance as well.

GeForce GTX 970M 3GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 970M 3GB is a high-end Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.
The Second Revision of Maxwell also adds the VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination) Technology which makes scenes significantly more lifelike and believable as light interacts more realistically in the game environment and the MFAA Technology which provides the same effect as MSAA but at a much lower performance cost.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM204 which has 10 SM activated and thus offers 1280 Shader Processing Units, 80 TMUs and 48 ROPs. The central unit runs at 924MHz and goes up to 993MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 192-bit memory interface. The memory clock operates at 1253MHz. The frame buffer size is adequate and any extra memory wouldn't add any extra performance.

Features
DirectX 12.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for SLI, GameStream, G-SYNC, GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Temperature
The Card is known to run cool. However, ultimately, it all depends on the notebook's cooling system.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 81W, it will only be equipped in large notebooks.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 10% faster than GeForce GTX 880M. Therefore, it should even surpass GeForce GTX 760 and be around as fast as desktop GeForce GTX 670. GeForce GTX 970M is therefore the second fastest mobile Graphics Card as of October 2014 and AMD's Radeon R9 M290X is beaten in over 20%.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Mobile Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce GTX 970M 6GB.
