31 Oct 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

Gamers upgrading will be considering the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI graphics card as a serious price to performance entry point. This card will meet and play most demanding AAA games and do so with good graphics setting as standard, and confidently pushing past the recommended game system requirements needed to run today’s games. GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI is capable of DirectX 12 gaming requirements.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2019. In comparison to the game recommended requirements of the 1000 most demanding games played today this PC hardware can run 792.

The 1080p FPS on Ultra for the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI shows us that Microsoft Flight Simulator is predicted to get a playable result of 36 FPS, and then we are seeing The Outer Worlds returning a reasonable 51 FPS while another game on our list is the Cyberpunk 2077 which is predicted to get 36 frames per second at Ultra 1080p.

One of the growing popular screen resolutions for PC gaming is the wider 1440p. So we wanted to see how well the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI performed at 1440p by taking a look at some of the current popular games. First we looked at The Outer Worlds and saw it deliver playable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 102 FPS, Medium: 80 FPS, High: 54 FPS and Ultra: 39 FPS. We then checked the performance on Cyberpunk 2077 to predict if that will run well. It is predicted to be playable with a 27 FPS at Ultra 1440p. GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 970M 6GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM204-N16E-GT-A2 which, together, offer 2560 Shader Processing Units, 160 TMUs and 96 ROPs, on a 384-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 924MHz and goes up to 993MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1253MHz.

Power Consumption
Power Consumption lies between 125W and 150W.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate this SLI setup is overall as fast as a desktop GeForce GTX 980 4GB. It surpasses GeForce GTX 880M in SLI easily and allows for even the most demanding games to be fully maxed out at 1080p.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Quad Core Processor) and 12GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI.
