How well can the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI run games
31 Oct 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI will blast beyond the majority of games requirements at 1080p, so crank up your screen resolution to 1440p or 4K and let the beautiful AAA game visuals wash over you. This is how gaming is meant to be played but you are likely to have to pay top dollar for the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI privilege. But if you can get this graphics solution, then its happy gaming. This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 12.

Here is a quick game performance synopsis for the AAA games played in 2019. In particular we focus on how well the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI runs at Ultra graphics settings and what frames per second it is getting at 1080p, 1440p and 4K monitor resolutions. Of the 1000 most demanding recommended specs found in game requirements today, this gpu is more powerful than the graphics requirement of 962 games in todays list.

The 1080p FPS on Ultra for the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI shows us that Borderlands 3 is getting a good result of 68 FPS, and then we are seeing Microsoft Flight Simulator predicted to return a reasonable 52 FPS while another game on our list is the Need For Speed Heat which is getting 68 frames per second at Ultra 1080p.

Next up we increase screen res tests to accommodate the growing in popularity 1440p screen size. So we researched the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator to predict how the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI would deal with it. Our research revealed a playable series of FPS results across these graphics presets - Low: 105 FPS, Medium: 82 FPS, High: 56 FPS and Ultra: 40 FPS. Next we looked at Need For Speed Heat which was reasonable with a 52 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And finally looked at Borderlands 3 that got an Ultra 1440p FPS of 52. Looking at a few of these 1440p results for the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI we get the impression that it is capable of delivering a solid gaming experience across larger screen sized monitors. We expect to see High and Ultra graphics settings across most games at 1440p with this GPU.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI in your PC? No graphics card upgrade required for 2 to 3 years of meeting top end game system requirements

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI? If you want an upgrade suggestion for the GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI then a good choice would be 20 Series GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8GB as this is better than 994 of the top 1000 most demanding game requirements with 25% better performance as well.

GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 970 4GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM204-400-A1 which, together, offer 3328 Shader Processing Units, 208 TMUs and 128 ROPs, on a 512-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1050MHz and goes up to 1178MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.

Power Consumption
Power Consumption lies between 300W and 400W.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks prove that at 4K (3840x2160) GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI is over 25% faster than Radeon HD 7990 and almost as fast as AMD's Radeon R9 295X2.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Six Core/AMD FX Eight Core) and 16GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 970 4GB SLI.

GTX 970 SLI has similar and in some cases superior performance to the GTX 1070. Supports DX12, will handle anything you throw at it including VR and you can pick up a second 970 used online for under $200. Or you can pick up the $400-$600 GTX 1080 and not use its full potential for years. Your call. I would save $ tho.

Thanks, sounds like my best option would be to get a second gtx 970 for SLI, but can you tell me what are the benefits and consequences of using a used graphics card since you suggested a used 970? (for example: is it possible for a person to install a virus onto the used graphics card or any sort of program that can damage my computer?)

Personally, you should always buy a single card over any type of multi config. The amount of games that support SLI are few and far between. However, if all the games you're gonna be playing support it, and you know for sure, then it's worth it. In other words, do some research first before shelling out money on a second card, and compare performance with a single card from an upgraded series.

I checked a lot of forums many months ago (970 sli vs single card) and single card wins all the time. Thanks for your reply :) The price of 1080 is too high here(+-1000$) :(
