28 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce GTX 980M 8GB SLI will blast beyond the majority of games requirements at 1080p, so crank up your screen resolution to 1440p or 4K and let the beautiful AAA game visuals wash over you. This is how gaming is meant to be played but you are likely to have to pay top dollar for the GeForce GTX 980M 8GB SLI privilege. But if you can get this graphics solution, then its happy gaming. This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 12.

What FPS performance can the GeForce GTX 980M 8GB SLI get on latest AAA 2019 games? In particular our game review looks at the FPS achieved running on Ultra graphics settings on the 1080p screen resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. When considering how well this graphics card can run the 1000 most demanding games available today it can best 898 of the games’ recommended graphics requirements.

The GeForce GTX 980M 8GB SLI graphics card is returning a strong performance on eFootball PES 2020 at 1080p of 98 frames per second at Ultra graphics settings. Another popular title that is good to benchmark graphics cards against is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare which we saw got good frame rates of 60 FPS. A third game we can look at on Ultra at 1080p is the popular Cyberpunk 2077, which is predicted to get 49 FPS under tests.

With PC gamers looking for larger screen sizes like 1440p we tested the GeForce GTX 980M 8GB SLI by playing eFootball PES 2020 which yielded a good performance. Its FPS results for the graphics settings are as follows - L: 196FPS, M: 155FPS, H: 104FPS, U: 74FPS. Another popular game we tested with this card was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and that was reasonable. This graphics card delivered 45 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Another popular title was Cyberpunk 2077 which is predicted to get playable results with a 37FPS on Ultra 1440p. Running games at 1440p with a GeForce GTX 980M 8GB SLI is a good choice of hardware for increased screen resolution gaming. We can see this graphics card is capable of delivering reliable frame rates at Ultra and certainly High graphics settings at 1440p.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 980M 8GB SLI graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 980M 8GB SLI in your PC? No graphics card upgrade required for 2 to 3 years of meeting top end game system requirements

Yeah, the 980M SLi is a really great card. Was actually planning on upgrading to it but the gap between my GPU and yours is too small. Even the highest score that the 980M SLi achieves in 3dmark firestrike is only marginally better by 42fps

Don't compare 'highest' scores - those are VERY unstable overclocks that only last minutes before crashing. Gaming does not work on those clocks and therefore they're useless.
On average with 'gaming-grade' overclocks you can get double the performance of 780Ms, which is what I got. You'd still get -50% or so better framerates if you upgraded and you'd also benefit from faster hardware tessellation.

The 880M SLi is roughly on the same level as a GTX 980 while yours is on the same level as a 980 Ti. If you were wondering: http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/7149225/fs/2402025.

With my cards I score better in Firestrike than an average overclocked 980Ti/Titan X so I am fully aware of the fact (check my Firestrike vs GreedyMuffin's, he made me aware of this) :P
As for 880Ms… I hope you're not throttling because those cards throttle like crazy from what I've heard. I even had to flash a custom VBIOS to stop my 980Ms from doing that…
After that - double performance vs my OC'd 780M SLI

Fortunately, they don't throttle as I would have already upgraded by now if they did. Stock for stock, there is a 20fps increase when comparing your 980M sli to my 880M sli in practically every game. I get 66fps in unigine heavenstockthough

You're one of the few lucky owners of 880M if your GPUs aren't frying, throttling and are stable. I've read waay too much about them to warrant and upgrade to 880Ms when they came out :)

Yes, I do. Money's not a worry. But now I'm contemplating a desktop. Figured if I get all the parts myself, for 2200GBP I can get 2xGTX980 (SLI), 32GB DDR4, i7 5930K Extreme, 750W PSU and a fancy box…
Probably a better choice than upgrading the laptop..
