How well can the GeForce GTX 970 4GB run games
22 May 2020 - Graphics card reviewed

While some games have more powerful requirements than this GPU, the GeForce GTX 970 4GB is only really challenged by the most demanding games released today, but normally it is more than capable of running games with a stable frame rate at 1080p. This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 12.

This PC hardware performance game review for the GeForce GTX 970 4GB graphics card, when running 2020 more popular games, lets us see what type of FPS this card gets when playing at 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions and ultra settings. We look at 1000 of the most demanding games available today and this GPU is better than the recommended graphics requirement of more than 386 games in the list.

Running at 1080p this card is predicted to get a weak frame rate from Grand Theft Auto VI with 6 FPS on Ultra. Then we take a look at Call of Duty Warzone which returns a playable 40 FPS. Another title that we looked at is the popular Crucible which we saw getting a playable 44 FPS.

We move on to 1440p, and predict that Grand Theft Auto VI will deliver weak FPS results. Here are the graphic presets - Low: 12 FPS, Medium: 10 FPS, High: 6 FPS and Ultra: 5 FPS. Next we have Call of Duty Warzone running on GeForce GTX 970 4GB which gets L: 80FPS, M: 63FPS, H: 42FPS, U: 30FPS. And for performance contrast the popular Crucible gets L: 88FPS, M: 69FPS, H: 46FPS, U: 33FPS at 1440p. Looking at a few of these 1440p results for the GeForce GTX 970 4GB we get the impression that it is in need of some graphics adjustments to get some stability, which means its not an ideal gaming resolution for this GPU.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 970 4GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 970 4GB in your PC? Our current calculations suggest a graphics card upgrade will be required in around 12-18 months

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 970 4GB? A suitable upgrade choice for the GeForce GTX 970 4GB is the 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, which is 44% more powerful and can run 866 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements. An alternative great upgrade graphics card would be a R-500 Series Radeon RX 590 8GB, which has 22% better performance and can run 818 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today.

GeForce GTX 970 4GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 970 4GB is a high-end Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Maxwell architecture. Its relatively low release price and mind-blowing performance made it an extremely competitive product. Read below to know more.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.
The Second Revision of Maxwell also adds the VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination) Technology which makes scenes significantly more lifelike and believable as light interacts more realistically in the game environment and the MFAA Technology which provides the same effect as MSAA but at a much lower performance cost.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM204-200-A1 which has 13 SM activated and thus offers 1664 Shader Processing Units, 104 TMUs and 56 ROPs, on a 256-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1050MHz and goes up to 1178MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.

Features
DirectX 12.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for SLI, MFAA, VXGI, GameStream, G-SYNC, GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Cooling Solution
The Cooling Solution consists of a Single-Fan and is identical to the one seen on GeForce GTX 770. The Card is known to run cool and has a maximum operating temperature of 95ºC.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 145W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with two available 6-pin connectors.

Release Price
Pricing is lower than the one seen on its predecessors - $329.99 and makes it an extremely competitive product.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks prove that at 4K (3840x2160) GeForce GTX 970 4GB is over 25% faster than its predecessor and even beats GeForce GTX 780 in about 10%.

System Suggestions
GeForce GTX 970 4GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a Very Strong Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
