How well can the GeForce GTX 960 2GB run games
14 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

A mid level piece of gaming hardware, this GeForce GTX 960 2GB graphics card can still meet and run indie system requirements and some of the less demanding AAA games. This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 12.

Lets look at the GeForce GTX 960 2GB game performance guide for some of the biggest games played in 2019. In particular we will see how well this graphics card runs on Ultra settings on 1080p resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. This graphics hardware can run 215 of the 1000 most demanding PC games played today.

Looking at some of the modern popular games people are playing today the GeForce GTX 960 2GB is running Planet Zoo and delivering weak performances on 1080p Ultra, getting 0 frames per second. Comparing this to Need For Speed Heat which is getting weak results, where it averages 15 FPS. Another popular game we looked at is Red Dead Redemption 2, which is running at 15 frames per second.

One of the growing popular screen resolutions for PC gaming is the wider 1440p. So we wanted to see how well the GeForce GTX 960 2GB performed at 1440p by taking a look at some of the current popular games. First we looked at Planet Zoo and saw it deliver weak frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 0 FPS, Medium: 0 FPS, High: 0 FPS and Ultra: 0 FPS. We then checked the performance on Need For Speed Heat to see if that runs well. It was weak with a 11 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Running games at 1440p with a GeForce GTX 960 2GB is going to struggle at this higher gaming resolution.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 960 2GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 960 2GB in your PC? 12-18 months of top end gaming is still left in this graphics card

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 960 2GB? Are you looking to upgrade a GeForce GTX 960 2GB? Then we would suggest getting a 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB, as it can run 897 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today with 114% increased graphics performance. Alternatively upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500 4GB which is 60% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 686 games from the most demanding games today.

GeForce GTX 960 2GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 960 2GB is a Performance Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.
The Second Revision of Maxwell also adds the VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination) Technology which makes scenes significantly more lifelike and believable as light interacts more realistically in the game environment and the MFAA Technology which provides the same effect as MSAA but at a much lower performance cost.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed GM206-300-A1 which has 8 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 1024 Shader Processing Units, 64 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is initially clocked at 1127MHz and goes up to 1158MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1753MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 120W, it requires at least a 400W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Performance
At 1920x1080, the best suited resolution for GeForce GTX 960, benchmarks indicate its performance is a little over the older GeForce GTX 670.
Therefore, GeForce GTX 770 and even Radeon R9 280X are still faster, though less energy efficient.

System Suggestions
GeForce GTX 960 2GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.

I question that too. The cards are very close especially when u compare the non-stock factory OC cards since maxwell overclocks better than pascal.

no real bottleneck. and yes the card will run older games very well at high settings. even newer ones will usually run at high settings, with some games needing medium.
go for it if u can get it at a good price.
wait -- u have a 768p monitor, u are good to go then, this shld run anything at that res.

Get the 960 it's around 20% faster and costs only slightly more (atleast in my country). Or wait for the 1050 Ti which should even be faster than the 960.

Nope, sorry , but that CPU is holding you back, instead you should buy the 1050 ti when it comes out, but again is not a 1440p card, even the 1060 isnt if you want 60 fps ultra settings.

The 1080 is not comparable to the rx 480, but higly overclocked is perfect for 1080p 60 fps gaming as well as the 1060.i recommend getting a high end 6 gen i5 and a gtx 1060 or rx 480 and a 1080p 144 hz monitor.

You will be able to run many games on high, especially with your 4 GB model. However you may need to compromise on framerate, and will probably land around 30 FPS. Medium is a more optimistic value for higher framerates.

You mean a GTX 760 OEM? 3Go is good for this card but the GTX 960 is better than a stock GTX 760 which is a nenamed GTX 660. The GTX 960 is somewhere between a GTX 670 and a GTX 680 so if you can go for a 960 or wait for a 1060/RX 480
