How well can the GeForce 820M 1GB run games
28 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce 820M 1GB is a very low performing piece of gaming hardware and can probably only run indie system requirements. Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 11 requirement.

How many years will the GeForce 820M 1GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce 820M 1GB in your PC? You should definitely consider replacing this GeForce 820M 1GB graphics card, if it is still in your gaming PC.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce 820M 1GB? A great upgrade graphics card would be a 20 Series GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile, which has 1518% better performance and can run 982 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today. Alternatively we would suggest getting a RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500M 8GB, as it can run 588 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today with 907% increased graphics performance.

GeForce 820M 1GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce 820M 1GB is a entry-level Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Fermi Architecture.

Architecture
The Fermi Architecture is manufactured with a 40nm Technology and uses a technique known as Hot Clocking: The Shaders are clocked twice as fast as the Central Unit. While this leads to a reasonable performance boost, it causes enormous amounts of energy dissipation, leading, ultimately, to a significantly higher operating temperature.
Fermi is also the first GPU architecture with fully cached memory access which increases memory performance.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed GF117-N15V-GM which has 2 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 96 Shader Processing Units, 16 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The Central Unit is initially clocked at 625MHz and may reach up to 955MHz, in Turbo Mode.
Additionally, GF117 is built using a 28nm technology.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and no way benefits the GPU. The Memory Clock Operates at 900MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Optimus, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX, Realtime Raytracing and other technologies

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 15W, it is suited for average sized laptops.

Performance
GeForce 820M 1GB is essentially a fast GeForce GT 720M.
Gaming benchmarks indicate its performance is slightly above the older GeForce GT 720M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i3 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a system with GeForce 820M 1GB.

820m is supposed to be better than intel hd 4400, but it really is not. 820m lags(screenfreeze) and heats a lot, while 4400 does not. - personal experience.
