How well can the GeForce 840M 2GB run games
28 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce 840M 2GB is a very low performing piece of gaming hardware and can probably only run indie system requirements. All games with system requirements of DirectX 11 or lower are met by this card.

How many years will the GeForce 840M 2GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce 840M 2GB in your PC? You should definitely consider replacing this GeForce 840M 2GB graphics card, if it is still in your gaming PC.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce 840M 2GB? Upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the 20 Series GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile which is 875% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 982 games from the most demanding games today. Alternatively a suitable upgrade choice for the GeForce 840M 2GB is the RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500M 8GB, which is 507% more powerful and can run 580 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements.

GeForce 840M 2GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce 840M 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Maxwell architecture features many improvements and among them is the extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM108 which has 3 SM activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1029MHz and goes up to 1124MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The Frame Buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1001MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.2 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it will only be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 20% faster than the older GeForce GT 740M. Therefore, it should match GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce 840M 2GB.

It has 2 hyperthreaded cores, meaning the OS will see 4 logical cores. But it won't give a 100% performance gain like 2 physical cores. More like 15% (or more if a game runs badly on 2 logical cores). But it's a nice combination anyway.

I have this GPU but when I play games, say Dota 2, I always get 20fps-40fps on 768p high; even when all is set to 720p low, I still get 20-40fps. I have read others getting good fps on games like Metro with this GPU. I have already set this GPU to be used in Nvidia control panel. Any help?

Does this happen on any other games? If not trying updating things like your Direct X etc and see if that would make a difference.

Yea, but I fixed the problem. Turns out it was the power plan set to Balanced instead of High Performance. Thanks though! :)

Awesome graphics card. Games like Portal 2, Fable 3 or STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl run very smoothly on this, even on highest settings.

I have a laptop with this card and it has a full hd screen. You can play games like League of Legends and FIFA at high settings no problem. Games like far cry 4 and Battlefield 4 really require more power..

on 768p you should be able to get playable framerates as kibber said. And its not going to burn the GPU in any case. the system is going to stop before that happens ;). it constantly measures the temperatures so dont worry.
