How well can the GeForce GTX 1080 run games
14 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

A true powerhouse, the GeForce GTX 1080 will run even the most demanding game system requirements released today. DirectX 12 gaming system requirements will be met by this gpu.

What FPS performance can the GeForce GTX 1080 get on latest AAA 2019 games? In particular our game review looks at the FPS achieved running on Ultra graphics settings on the 1080p screen resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. This graphics hardware can run 973 of the 1000 most demanding PC games played today.

Looking at some of the modern popular games people are playing today the GeForce GTX 1080 is predicted to run Cyberpunk 2077 with reasonable performances on 1080p Ultra, getting 55 frames per second. Comparing this to Borderlands 3 which is getting good results, where it averages 72 FPS. Another popular game we looked at is Planet Zoo, which is running at 55 frames per second.

One of the growing popular screen resolutions for PC gaming is the wider 1440p. So we wanted to see how well the GeForce GTX 1080 performed at 1440p by taking a look at some of the current popular games. First we looked at Cyberpunk 2077 and predict it will deliver playable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 111 FPS, Medium: 87 FPS, High: 59 FPS and Ultra: 42 FPS. We then checked the performance on Borderlands 3 to see if that runs well. It was reasonable with a 55 FPS at Ultra 1440p. In summary we feel the GeForce GTX 1080 running at 1440p is capable of delivering a solid gaming experience across larger screen sized monitors. We expect to see High and Ultra graphics settings across most games at 1440p with this GPU.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 1080 in your PC? 2-3 years of top end gaming before an upgrade

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 1080? A great upgrade graphics card would be a 20 Series GeForce RTX 2080, which has 22% better performance and can run 997 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today.

GeForce GTX 1080 Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 1080 is a High-End Graphics Card based on the Pascal Architecture.

Architecture
It equips a GPU Codenamed P104-400-A1 which is a First Gen Pascal GPU and has 20 SM activated, offering 2560 Shader Processing Units, 160 TMUs and 64 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 1607MHz and goes up to 1733MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 8GB frame buffer of Second Gen GDDR5X, through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 1251MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 180W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with one available 8-pin connector.

Performance
Benchmarks Indicate GeForce GTX 1080 can be over 25% Faster than GeForce GTX 980 Ti at 4K. In Fact, even the Dual Radeon R9 295X2 is easily topped.
At 1920x1080, the default rank for all GD Graphics Card, expect a performance boost ranging between 20% and 30%, over GeForce GTX 980 Ti.
As of May 2016, GeForce GTX 1080 is the fastest single Graphics Card available.

System Suggestions
GeForce GTX 1080 is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1600. We recommend a High-End Processor and 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.

srry i don't want to be rude, but realist.I said that because it's not going to be future proof. We all know the devs will use crazy requirements next year.In 6 months i aim for gtx 1080 because next year gtx 970 will be on par for the recommended reqs.

I will wait for the GDDR5x gtx 1170, and yes currently i have this i5 and a gt 730 so it should be a big upgrade, i don´t think the bottleneck will be that important in the next 2-3 years, as long as it meets the minimum im ok with that i won´t be playing at 4k in the next 5 years xD.

There is no reason you should change your graphic card now. You can always OC your card a little bit and have very similar performance. :)

I have a 970, should I…

1) Get a 1070?
2) Get a 1080 or maybe the Ti?
3) Wait for Volta in 2018?

Of course this is after more benchmarks have been released for 1070 and 1080.
Thanks.

I'm getting one on launch day (If there are any available) and even though the increase in performance will be nice, I'm most excited about Simultaneous Multi Projection. Nvidia Surround Gaming is going to be much better now. :D

  1. It really isn't overpriced. I like the reference design and that it exhausts out the back. It's also the best price/performance card that exists right now.
  2. The price (even the extra $100) is worth it to me for the card. It uses premium parts (unlike older reference models).

considering your first point, it may be the best performance/price card for now but its going to lose this title very soon when the gtx 1070 and the polaris cards drop :P

That perfectly fine as I don't really care, eventually every card gets topped. For now, it's the best card I can get and I have the means to buy it. I'm looking for an upgrade and the GTX 1080 is the best on offer. If I keep waiting and waiting and waiting for the next best release, I'll be waiting forever… ;)

what I am talking about is a matter of 2 weeks which I consider waiting for but you are generally right. And since you want the very top card, there isnt going to be a competitor for that spoit in the following 3 or 4 months anyway so yeah. Enjoy your new GPU :D

Only 107% worse. Nice, I expected worse. I think I will get this baby once it is released and costs a decent amount of €€. I don't think there will be a bottleneck with my CPU too being an i7 and on, but the idea is to upgrade my monitor too once the debate on 4k vs. Ultrawide settles down a bit.
