How well can the Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition run games
14 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

This graphics card offers upper mid level gaming performance. The Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition GPU could struggle if it was to try and run the most demanding games available today, but it meets a lot of game system requirements found in today’s games. Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition is capable of DirectX 11 gaming requirements.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2019. The Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition can run the recommended graphics system requirements for 287 games today, of the top 1000 most demanding.

First we looked at 1080p resolution for the Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition performance to explore what sort of benchmarks it would achieve on the popular title Need For Speed Heat and saw it deliver playable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 65 FPS, Medium: 51 FPS, High: 34 FPS and Ultra: 25 FPS. We proceeded to look at Planet Zoo to see how that compared and saw that it returned a weak 19 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

One of the growing popular screen resolutions for PC gaming is the wider 1440p. So we wanted to see how well the Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition performed at 1440p by taking a look at some of the current popular games. First we looked at Need For Speed Heat and saw it deliver weak frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 49 FPS, Medium: 39 FPS, High: 26 FPS and Ultra: 19 FPS. We then checked the performance on Planet Zoo to see if that runs well. It was weak with a 14 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Getting popular modern games to run at 1440p on the Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition is not ideal and its more advisable to run modern games at 1080p resolution. But if you really want to play games at 1440p then you will likely have to make some graphical adjustments to improve game FPS stability.

How many years will the Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition in your PC? 12-18 months of top end gaming is still left in this graphics card

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon HD 7970 MSI OC Edition? Upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB which is 102% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 899 games from the most demanding games today. Alternatively we would suggest getting a RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500 4GB, as it can run 683 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today with 48% increased graphics performance.

I actually bought a XFX DD wasn't a BE though it was a 925mhz got a great price on it but ended up returning it because it was voltage locked and I couldn't even get a 30mhz oc on it in a couple of games. The quality was superb though with it's aluminum case. I have already got a 65mhz oc with this one staple in a couple of games so far.

Nice anything over a 1000 is bad ass. Got mine up to 1145 with a voltage bump for some reason my voltage was very low 1.100v for 1010mhz. My 925mhz xfx was 1.175v.
