How well can the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) run games
14 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

Getting one of these Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) graphics cards allows the gamer to run indie system requirements and some less demanding AAA titles. In today’s PC hardware terms these are considered middle range for gaming performance. This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 11.

What FPS performance can the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) get on latest AAA 2019 games? In particular our game review looks at the FPS achieved running on Ultra graphics settings on the 1080p screen resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. The Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) can run the recommended graphics system requirements for 133 games today, of the top 1000 most demanding.

Now onto the frame rates achieved at 1080p. We are seeing Planet Zoo getting 6 FPS with the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM), FIFA 20 getting 86 FPS and Cyberpunk 2077 predicted to get 0 frames per second. All run on Ultra at 1920x1080 screen res.

People are turning their increasingly more powerful graphics cards to the popular 1440p screen size so we tested the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) to see how it performs on 1440p. First off we have looked at Planet Zoo where it was weak. The frame rates it scored for the game presets were - Low: 11 FPS, Medium: 9 FPS, High: 6 FPS and Ultra: 4 FPS. We added FIFA 20 to our tests and saw it was good with a 65 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And then researched Cyberpunk 2077 leading us to predict 0 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Gaming at 1440p with the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is in need of some graphics adjustments to get some stability, which means its not an ideal gaming resolution for this GPU.

How many years will the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) in your PC? We think this Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) has around 6-12 months until an upgrade should be considered.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM)? A great upgrade graphics card would be a 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB, which has 131% better performance and can run 895 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today. Alternatively we would suggest getting a RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500 4GB, as it can run 684 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today with 73% increased graphics performance.

Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is an OEM Only, High-End Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 revision of the Graphics Core Next Architecture adds new important technologies and is largely oriented for energy efficiency. New technologies such as PowerTune and TrueAudio are the biggest additions as well as DirectX 11.2 support.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Tahiti PRO2 which has 28 Compute Units activated and thus offers 1792 Shader Processing Units, 112 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 850MHz and goes up to 925MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 384-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The Memory Clock Operates at 1250MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 200W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with two available 6-pin connectors.

Performance
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7950 Boost Edition and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor (Intel Core i5 Quad Core/AMD FX Six Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
