How well can the GeForce GTX 460M run games
28 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce GTX 460M is a very low performing piece of gaming hardware and can probably only run indie system requirements. This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 11.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 460M graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 460M in your PC? Its upgrade time for the GeForce GTX 460M, assuming you are a modern day gamer.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 460M? A good upgrade choice for this graphics card today would be the 20 Series GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile. For comparison of the 1000 most demanding games around today this suggested upgrade is 875% better and can meet 982 of their recommended requirements. Alternatively a suitable upgrade choice for the GeForce GTX 460M is the RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500M 8GB, which is 507% more powerful and can run 588 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements.

GeForce GTX 460M Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 460M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the first revision of the Fermi Architecture.

Architecture
The Fermi Architecture is manufactured with a 40nm technology and uses a technique known as Hot Clocking: The Shaders are clocked twice as fast as the Central Unit. While this leads to a reasonable performance boost, it causes enormous amounts of energy dissipation, leading, ultimately, to a significantly higher operating temperature.
Fermi is also the first GPU architecture with fully cached memory access which increases memory performance.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed GF106-N11E-GE-A1 which has 4 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 192 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 24 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 675MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 625MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Optimus, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX, Realtime Raytracing and other technologies

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 50W, it is suited for average sized laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance almost on level with the desktop GeForce GT 450 v2.

System Suggestions
We recommend a decent processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 460M.

Big titles (like Max Payne 3 and Crysis 3) will not run on high but most of the other games should run fine with decent FPS on high settings :)

But this card should be a rank 8. Demanding games like Crysis 2 and metro run on high settings.

Laptop hardware is designed to use far less power than the desktop versions and consequently the laptop equivalent is significantly less powerful than the desktop version.

Make sure you do plenty of research before you purchase a gaming laptop.

My G53Jw has the GTX460M, didn't purchase the SX version with the GTX560M because it is a waste of money. I just overclocked my GTX460M to the 560M, and spared some money :) that's how I purchase a gaming laptop (:

GTX 460M is 49% weaker than its desktop version. I have tried comparing some other mobile cards to their desktop counterpart, and most of them are 40%-60% weaker according to game-debate. Is that precise?
