How well can the GeForce 840M 2GB run games
13 Dec 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce 840M 2GB is a very low performing piece of gaming hardware and can probably only run indie system requirements. All games with system requirements of DirectX 11 or lower are met by this card.

How many years will the GeForce 840M 2GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce 840M 2GB in your PC? You should definitely consider replacing this GeForce 840M 2GB graphics card, if it is still in your gaming PC.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce 840M 2GB? If you are thinking of upgrading this graphics card then we would currently suggest the 20 Series GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile. This PC hardware upgrade performs 875% better and can run 982 of today’s 1000 most demanding PC games. Alternatively a good choice when looking to upgrade the GeForce 840M 2GB would be the RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500M 8GB which meets 575 of the 1000 top game’s recommended system requirements and has 507% better performance.

GeForce 840M 2GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce 840M 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Maxwell architecture features many improvements and among them is the extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM108 which has 3 SM activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1029MHz and goes up to 1124MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The Frame Buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1001MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.2 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it will only be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 20% faster than the older GeForce GT 740M. Therefore, it should match GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce 840M 2GB.

Just watched those specs from here and compared with my GPU-Z.
Corrections according to my 840M viewing GPU-Z:
Non OC Values: (GM108/A2/28nm/2014)
ROPs: 16 /not 8
TexturefillRate: 24.7GTexel/s - GD: 27GTexel/s
PixelfillRate: 16.5GPixel/s - GD: 9GPixel/s (WTF?)
Bandwith: 14.4GB/s - GD: 16GB/s
MemoryClock: 900MHz - GD: 1001MHz
With ca 9% OC it goes way over GD perf values so I am good =)

A very good GFX if you're in for "Light gaming", I can run MGSV: Phantom Pain on high settings 1366x768 40-50 FPS (even though it's just the optimization). If you want a mid-range gaming PC, I recommend these specs.

I play GTA V on these settings: http://imgur.com/a/VRtCj with the 840M and a i5-5200U getting around 30-50 fps.

These are my temps before starting the game: http://imgur.com/gxF8cGd.

These are my temps while playing the game: http://imgur.com/JA6PRaU.

I use SpeedFan to see my temps btw. So my GPU was around the 60 degrees Celcius. Note that I did have Intel Turbo Boost on.

Yes, performance will be similar between the 2 versions, because the 840m's memory bus and bandwidth are made for only 1gb vram ;)

Very rarely with the 840m because manufacturers will not find much room to fit the budget of MXM sockets into the budget laptop's price.
