In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon X1550 are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 4290.

The Radeon HD 4290 was released over three years more recently than the Radeon X1550, and so the Radeon HD 4290 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Radeon X1550 when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.

The Radeon X1550 has 128 MB more video memory than the Radeon HD 4290, so is likely to be slightly better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Radeon X1550 also has superior memory performance overall.

The Radeon X1550 has 12.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 4290, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon X1550 is slightly better than the Radeon HD 4290.

The Radeon HD 4290 has 40 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon X1550 has 4. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 4290 is 18 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon X1550 is 1. The Radeon HD 4290 having 17 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the Radeon X1550 performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The Radeon X1550 requires 27 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Radeon HD 4290. We would recommend a PSU with at least 420 Watts for the Radeon X1550, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the Radeon HD 4290.

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 4290 (IGP) is an integrated GPU on the AMD 890GX Chipset.
It's based on the RS880D Core and offers 40 Shader Processing Units, 4 TMUs and 4 ROPs a 32-bit memory interface of either DDR2 (more commonly) or DDR3. The central unit runs, commonly, at up to 700MHz and the memory clock's operating speed depends on the system RAM's speed.
Radeon HD 4290's performance depends on the users system configuration which will define the operating memory clock's speed and on the desktop manufacturer which decides its central unit's speed.
Therefore, Radeon HD 4290, even if paired with DDR3 won't offer similar performance to the dedicated Radeon HD 4350. DirectX 11 games aren't supported.
Radeon X1550 is an entry-level GPU based on the 80nm variant of the R500 architecture.
It's based on the RV516 Core and offers 4 Pixel Shaders, 4 TMUs and 4 ROPs, on a 128-bit of standard DDR. The central unit runs at 550MHz and the memory clock operates at up to 400MHz.
It's therefore an underclocked Radeon X1300 PRO (although a 600MHz version is also available and will offer identical performance) with Crossfire support. As it's not based on a Shader-Unified architecture, both DirectX 10 & 11 games aren't supported.
