In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 6550M are marginally better than the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT.

The Radeon HD 6550M was released over a year more recently than the GeForce 9800M GT, and so the Radeon HD 6550M is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GeForce 9800M GT.

The Radeon HD 6550M has 512 MB more video memory than the GeForce 9800M GT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, overall, the GeForce 9800M GT has superior memory performance.

The GeForce 9800M GT has 25.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 6550M, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 9800M GT is slightly better than the Radeon HD 6550M.

The Radeon HD 6550M has 400 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 9800M GT has 96. The two GPUs are based on different architectures, but deliver an equivalent shader performance. To compare, we must continue to look at the memory bandwidth, Texture and Pixel Rates. In this case, we sadly do not have enough data in this area to complete the comparison.

The Radeon HD 6550M transistor size technology is 25 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GeForce 9800M GT. This means that the Radeon HD 6550M is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GeForce 9800M GT. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the Radeon HD 6550M should consume less power than the GeForce 9800M GT.

The Radeon HD 6550M requires 26 Watts to run and the GeForce 9800M GT requires 65 Watts. The GeForce 9800M GT requires 39 Watts more than the Radeon HD 6550M to run. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce 9800M GT may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD 6550M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 6550M is a middle-class GPU based on the 40nm Terrascale 2 architecture.
It's based on the Redwood Core (therefore related to Radeon HD 5670) and offers 400 Shader Processing Units, 20 TMUs and 8 ROPs on a 128-bit memory interface of standard DDR3. Its central clock runs at 600MHz and the memory clock operates at 800MHz.
Therefore, it's a renamed Mobility HD 5650 and it should perform better than Radeon HD 6630M.
Using a 720p resolution, almost all of today's games are only playable at medium settings but with very fluent frame rates (40+).
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GT GPUs deliver optimized performance for immersive gaming on-the-go. Powering the next generation of visual computing, blazing-fast mobile gaming, and the ultimate HD experience with PureVideo HD technology. This product is also enabled for CUDA applications and is NVIDIA PhysX-ready.
