In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 6800 XT are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce 405.

The GeForce 405 was released over three years more recently than the GeForce 6800 XT, and so the GeForce 405 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GeForce 6800 XT when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.

The GeForce 405 has 768 MB more video memory than the GeForce 6800 XT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GeForce 405 also has superior memory performance overall.

The GeForce 405 has 1.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 6800 XT, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 405 is marginally better than the GeForce 6800 XT.

The GeForce 405 has 16 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 6800 XT has 12. However, the actual shader performance of the GeForce 405 is 22 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 6800 XT is 4. The GeForce 405 having 18 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GeForce 405 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce 6800 XT.

The GeForce 405 requires 25 Watts to run but there is no entry for the GeForce 6800 XT. We would recommend a PSU with at least 300 Watts for the GeForce 405.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewGeForce 405 (OEM only) is an entry-level Gfx based on the 2009, 40nm, second-generation unified architecture and not in the Fermi architecture, like the rest of the series and is a renamed GeForce 210 (2nd revision).
It's based on the GT218 Core (same used on GeForce 210) and offers 16 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs, on 64-bit memory interface of standard DDR3. The central unit runs at 589MHz and the memory clock operates at 790MHz.
It comes with two variants: one with a frame buffer of 512MB and another with 1GB - both offer the same performance.
GeForce 405 is a renamed GeForce 210, with a lower TDP and so it's only suited for modest 3D games (high settings). Modern demanding games will have to be played at the lowest settings or are unplayable at all. DirectX 11 games aren't supported.
The groundbreaking new NVIDIA GeForce 6800 graphics processing units (GPUs) and their revolutionary technologies power worlds where reality and fantasy meet; worlds in which new standards are set for visual realism and quality, performance, and video functionality. The GeForce 6800 GPUs deliver powerful, elegant graphics to drench your senses, immersing you in unparalleled worlds of visual effects for the ultimate PC experience.
