In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 16GB Mobile.

The GeForce RTX 3070 has a 400 MHz higher core clock speed but 28 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the RTX 3080. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GeForce RTX 3070 manages to provide 42.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GeForce RTX 3070 has a 400 MHz higher core clock speed and 32 more Render Output Units than the RTX 3080. This results in the GeForce RTX 3070 providing 73.6 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RTX 3080 was released less than a year after the GeForce RTX 3070, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The RTX 3080 has 8192 MB more video memory than the GeForce RTX 3070, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the RTX 3080 also has superior memory performance overall.

The RTX 3080 has 112 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce RTX 3070, which means that the memory performance of the RTX 3080 is massively better than the GeForce RTX 3070.

The GeForce RTX 3080 16GB Mobile has 6144 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce RTX 3070 has 5888. However, the actual shader performance of the RTX 3080 is 10445 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce RTX 3070 is 10157. The RTX 3080 having 288 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the RTX 3080 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce RTX 3070.

The GeForce RTX 3080 16GB Mobile requires 150 Watts to run and the GeForce RTX 3070 requires 220 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 650 Watts for the GeForce RTX 3070, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 3080. The GeForce RTX 3070 requires 70 Watts more than the RTX 3080 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce RTX 3070 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 3080.
