In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super Mobile.

The GeForce RTX 3080 has a 300 MHz higher core clock speed and 52 more Texture Mapping Units than the RTX 2070. This results in the GeForce RTX 3080 providing 122.9 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GeForce RTX 3080 has a 300 MHz higher core clock speed than the RTX 2070 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GeForce RTX 3080 providing 19.2 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GeForce RTX 3080 was released less than a year after the RTX 2070, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GeForce RTX 3080 has 2048 MB more video memory than the RTX 2070, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, the overall memory performance is about the same.

The GeForce RTX 3080 having 11351 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the RTX 2070 performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The GeForce RTX 3080 transistor size technology is 4 nm (nanometers) smaller than the RTX 2070. This means that the GeForce RTX 3080 is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the RTX 2070.

The GeForce RTX 2070 Super Mobile requires 115 Watts to run and the GeForce RTX 3080 requires 320 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the GeForce RTX 3080, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 2070. The GeForce RTX 3080 requires 205 Watts more than the RTX 2070 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce RTX 3080 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 2070.

Architecture It equips a Turing GPU Codenamed TU104 which is a First Gen Turing GPU and has 40 SM activated, offering 2560 Shader Processing Units, 160 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. It also has 320 Tensor Cores for AI purposes. GPU The TU106 GPU used in the GeForce RTX 2070 Super Mobility is clocked lower than the desktop variant, leading to a slight reduction in game performance. The standard model has a base clock speed of 1605 MHz and a boost clock speed of 1770 MHz. Memory The GPU accesses an 8GB frame buffer of first-gen GDDR6 memory through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory clock operates at 1750MHz.
