In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 MSI Armor OC 6GB.

The GTX 1660 has a 645 MHz higher core clock speed than the RTX 2070, but the RTX 2070 has 96 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 1660. As a result, the RTX 2070 exhibits a 28.2 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTX 1660. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 1660 has a 645 MHz higher core clock speed but 16 fewer Render Output Units than the RTX 2070. The lower ROP count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GTX 1660 manages to provide 16.8 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 1660 was released less than a year after the RTX 2070, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The RTX 2070 has 2048 MB more video memory than the GTX 1660, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the RTX 2070 also has superior memory performance overall.

The RTX 2070 has 191.9 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 1660, which means that the memory performance of the RTX 2070 is massively better than the GTX 1660.

The GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q has 2304 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 1660 MSI Armor OC 6GB has 1408. However, the actual shader performance of the RTX 2070 is 2730 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 1660 is 2598. The RTX 2070 having 132 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the RTX 2070 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 1660.

The GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q requires 80 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 1660 MSI Armor OC 6GB requires 130 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the GTX 1660, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 2070. The GTX 1660 requires 50 Watts more than the RTX 2070 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 1660 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 2070.

However, this does impact performance. Architecture It equips a Turing GPU Codenamed TU106B N18E-G2-A1 which is a First Gen Turing GPU and has 20 SM activated, offering 2304 Shader Processing Units, 184 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. It also has 288 Tensor Cores for AI purposes.
