In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Asus ROG Strix A8G Gaming 8GB are noticeably better than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q.

The GTX 1080 has a 786 MHz higher core clock speed but 24 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the RTX 2070. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GTX 1080 manages to provide 104.6 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 1080 has a 786 MHz higher core clock speed than the RTX 2070 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GTX 1080 providing 50.3 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RTX 2070 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 1080, and so the RTX 2070 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 1080.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q and the GeForce GTX 1080 Asus ROG Strix A8G Gaming 8GB have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The RTX 2070 has 63.7 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 1080, which means that the memory performance of the RTX 2070 is much better than the GTX 1080.

The GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q has 2304 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 1080 Asus ROG Strix A8G Gaming 8GB has 2560. However, the actual shader performance of the RTX 2070 is 2730 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 1080 is 6255. The GTX 1080 having 3525 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 1080 delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the RTX 2070.

The RTX 2070 transistor size technology is 4 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 1080. This means that the RTX 2070 is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 1080.

The GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q requires 80 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 1080 Asus ROG Strix A8G Gaming 8GB requires 300 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 1080, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 2070. The GTX 1080 requires 220 Watts more than the RTX 2070 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 1080 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 2070.

However, this does impact performance. Architecture It equips a Turing GPU Codenamed TU106B N18E-G2-A1 which is a First Gen Turing GPU and has 20 SM activated, offering 2304 Shader Processing Units, 184 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. It also has 288 Tensor Cores for AI purposes. GPU Name: TU106B N18E-G2-A1 GPU The central unit runs at 885MHz and goes up to 1185MHz in Turbo Mode.
