In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super Gainward Ghost OC 6GB.

The GTX 1660 has a 540 MHz higher core clock speed than the RTX 2080, but the RTX 2080 has 96 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 1660. As a result, the RTX 2080 exhibits a 47.6 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTX 1660. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 1660 has a 540 MHz higher core clock speed but 16 fewer Render Output Units than the RTX 2080. The lower ROP count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GTX 1660 manages to provide 10 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 1660 was released over a year more recently than the RTX 2080, and so the GTX 1660 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the RTX 2080.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The RTX 2080 has 2048 MB more video memory than the GTX 1660, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the RTX 2080 also has superior memory performance overall.

The RTX 2080 has 48 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 1660, which means that the memory performance of the RTX 2080 is noticeably better than the GTX 1660.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W has 2944 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 1660 Super Gainward Ghost OC 6GB has 1408. However, the actual shader performance of the RTX 2080 is 3621 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 1660 is 2577. The RTX 2080 having 1044 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the RTX 2080 delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 1660.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W requires 90 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 1660 Super Gainward Ghost OC 6GB requires 125 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the GTX 1660, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 2080. The GTX 1660 requires 35 Watts more than the RTX 2080 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 1660 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 2080.

However, this does impact performance. Architecture It equips a Turing GPU Codenamed TU104 N18E-G3-A1 which is a First Gen Turing GPU and has 20 SM activated, offering 2944 Shader Processing Units, 184 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. It also has 368 Tensor Cores for AI purposes. GPU Name: TU104-400A-A1 GPU The central unit runs at 990MHz and goes up to 1230MHz in Turbo Mode.
