In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon RX 5700 MSI 8GB are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W.

The RX 5700 has a 475 MHz higher core clock speed but 40 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the RTX 2080. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the RX 5700 manages to provide 28.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The RX 5700 has a 475 MHz higher core clock speed than the RTX 2080 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the RX 5700 providing 30.4 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RX 5700 was released less than a year after the RTX 2080, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W and the Radeon RX 5700 MSI 8GB have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The RX 5700 has 64 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the RTX 2080, which means that the memory performance of the RX 5700 is much better than the RTX 2080.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W has 2944 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon RX 5700 MSI 8GB has 2304. However, the actual shader performance of the RTX 2080 is 3621 and the actual shader performance of the RX 5700 is 2583. The RTX 2080 having 1038 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the RX 5700 performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The RX 5700 transistor size technology is 5 nm (nanometers) smaller than the RTX 2080. This means that the RX 5700 is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the RTX 2080.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W requires 90 Watts to run and the Radeon RX 5700 MSI 8GB requires 180 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the RX 5700, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 2080. The RX 5700 requires 90 Watts more than the RTX 2080 to run. The difference is significant enough that the RX 5700 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 2080.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W is a High-End laptop Graphics Card based on the Turing Architecture. As a Max-Q graphics card it is ideally suited for thin gaming laptops. However, this does impact performance. Architecture It equips a Turing GPU Codenamed TU104 N18E-G3-A1 which is a First Gen Turing GPU and has 20 SM activated, offering 2944 Shader Processing Units, 184 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. It also has 368 Tensor Cores for AI purposes. GPU Name: TU104-400A-A1 GPU The central unit runs at 990MHz and goes up to 1230MHz in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU accesses an 8GB frame buffer of Second Gen GDDR6 through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 1500MHz, or 12GHz effective. Total memory bandwidth is 384 Gb/s. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 90W, the GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W is fairly power hungry for a laptop graphics processor. It runs around 15% faster than the 80W model. Performance Performance of the GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W falls a long way short of the desktop GeForce RTX 2080. However, the GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q is still a decently fast mobile graphics card which offers performance on par with a desktop GeForce GTX 1070. System Suggestions GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560 x 1440. We recommend a High-End Processor and 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.Overview
The AMD Radeon RX 5700 MSI 8GB is an Enthusiast gaming Graphics Card based on the first (1.0) Revision of the RDNA Architecture.

Architecture
The Navi 10 XL GPU offers support for GDDR6 Memory, DirectX 12.0, Vulkan 1.0, and OpenGL 4.5. This variant of the Navi 10 XL GPU features 36 Compute Units activated, offering 2304 Shader Processing Units, 144 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The GPU features a 1465 MHz base clock speed and up to 1725 MHz with boost clock, making it an estimated 15% faster than a GeForce RTX 2060. This puts its predicted performance roughly in line with the Radeon RX Vega 64.

GPU
The Central Unit is clocked at 1465 MHz, rising to 1725 MHz with boost clock enabled..

Memory: Speed
The GPU is equipped with high-speed GDDR6 and accesses the Frame Buffer through a 256-bit memory interface, providing total memory bandwidth of 448 GB/s.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 8GB. Under most circumstances, this only proves useful in certain 3D Games whose Settings Require Large Amounts of Memory.
However, the GPU itself is aimed for 4K Gaming, In some limited scenarios, 8GB might be a bottleneck and Performance could be better were the Frame Buffer larger, however this would only be an issue in the most demanding games.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 180W, it requires at least a 600W PSU with one available 8+6-pin connector.

Performance
The AMD Radeon RX 5700 MSI 8GB competes with GeForce RTX 2070 8GB, which is available for $499.
Specs currently available suggest the AMD Radeon RX 5700 MSI 8GB performance should be in the same region as the Radeon RX Vega 64.
System Suggestions
The AMD Radeon RX 5700 MSI 8GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 3840 x2160 (4K). For the most demanding AAA games it should be ideally suited to 1440p. We recommend a Very Strong Processor and at least 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
