In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary are noticeably better than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W.

The RX 5700 XT has a 690 MHz higher core clock speed but 24 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the RTX 2080. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the RX 5700 XT manages to provide 86.6 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The RX 5700 XT has a 690 MHz higher core clock speed than the RTX 2080 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the RX 5700 XT providing 44.1 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RX 5700 XT was released less than a year after the RTX 2080, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W and the Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The RX 5700 XT has 64 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the RTX 2080, which means that the memory performance of the RX 5700 XT is much better than the RTX 2080.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W has 2944 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary has 2560. However, the actual shader performance of the RTX 2080 is 3621 and the actual shader performance of the RX 5700 XT is 3295. The RTX 2080 having 326 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the RX 5700 XT performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The RX 5700 XT transistor size technology is 5 nm (nanometers) smaller than the RTX 2080. This means that the RX 5700 XT is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the RTX 2080.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W requires 90 Watts to run and the Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary requires 225 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the RX 5700 XT, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 2080. The RX 5700 XT requires 135 Watts more than the RTX 2080 to run. The difference is significant enough that the RX 5700 XT may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 2080.

Mini ReviewOverview The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W is a High-End laptop Graphics Card based on the Turing Architecture. As a Max-Q graphics card it is ideally suited for thin gaming laptops. However, this does impact performance. Architecture It equips a Turing GPU Codenamed TU104 N18E-G3-A1 which is a First Gen Turing GPU and has 20 SM activated, offering 2944 Shader Processing Units, 184 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. It also has 368 Tensor Cores for AI purposes.
