In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Galaxy HOF 3GB Edition.

The GTX 780 has a 271 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Texture Mapping Units than the RTX 2080. This results in the GTX 780 providing 58 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 780 has a 271 MHz higher core clock speed but 16 fewer Render Output Units than the RTX 2080. The lower ROP count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GTX 780 manages to provide 1.3 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RTX 2080 was released over three years more recently than the GTX 780, and so the RTX 2080 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GTX 780 when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The RTX 2080 has 5120 MB more video memory than the GTX 780, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the RTX 2080 also has superior memory performance overall.

The RTX 2080 has 95.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 780, which means that the memory performance of the RTX 2080 is massively better than the GTX 780.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q has 2944 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 780 Galaxy HOF 3GB Edition has 2304. However, the actual shader performance of the RTX 2080 is 3224 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 780 is 2438. The RTX 2080 having 786 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the RTX 2080 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 780.

The RTX 2080 transistor size technology is 16 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 780. This means that the RTX 2080 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 780.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q requires 80 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 780 Galaxy HOF 3GB Edition requires 250 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the GTX 780, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 2080. The GTX 780 requires 170 Watts more than the RTX 2080 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 780 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 2080.

Mini ReviewOverview The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q is a High-End laptop Graphics Card based on the Turing Architecture. As a Max-Q graphics card it is ideally suited for thin gaming laptops. However, this does impact performance. Architecture It equips a Turing GPU Codenamed GT104 which is a First Gen Turing GPU and has 20 SM activated, offering 2944 Shader Processing Units, 184 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. It also has 368 Tensor Cores for AI purposes. GPU Name: TU104-400A-A1 GPU The central unit runs at 735MHz and goes up to 1095MHz in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU accesses an 8GB frame buffer of Second Gen GDDR6 through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 1750MHz, or 14GHz effective. Total memory bandwidth is 448 Gb/s. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 80W, the GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q is fairly power hungry for a laptop graphics processor. Performance Performance of the GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q falls a long way short of the desktop GeForce RTX 2080. However, the GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q is still a decently fast mobile graphics card which offers performance on par with a desktop GeForce GTX 1070. System Suggestions GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560 x 1440. We recommend a High-End Processor and 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.GeForce GTX 780 Galaxy HOF 3GB Edition is a special edition of the high-end GeForce GTX 780.
This edition comes with a custom double fan cooling solution which will allow a reasonable performance boost from the start, as GeForce GTX 780 benefits from the GPU Boost 2.0 technology.
Also, it has been overclocked out of the box from 863MHz to 1006MHz while its boost clock is now of 1058MHz. The memory clock was left untouched.
Benchmarks indicate a 11% performance boost when compared to the reference card and so this edition performs slightly better than GeForce GTX Titan.
