In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Gainward Ghost OC 6GB are very slightly better than the AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB.

The GTX 1660 has a 273 MHz higher core clock speed than the RX 580, but the RX 580 has 56 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 1660. As a result, the RX 580 exhibits a 46.4 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTX 1660. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 1660 has a 273 MHz higher core clock speed and 16 more Render Output Units than the RX 580. This results in the GTX 1660 providing 33.2 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 1660 was released over a year more recently than the RX 580, and so the GTX 1660 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the RX 580.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The RX 580 has 2048 MB more video memory than the GTX 1660, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the RX 580 also has superior memory performance overall.

The RX 580 has 63.9 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 1660, which means that the memory performance of the RX 580 is much better than the GTX 1660.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Gainward Ghost OC 6GB has 1408 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon RX 580 8GB has 2304. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 1660 is 2577 and the actual shader performance of the RX 580 is 3087. The RX 580 having 510 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the RX 580 delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 1660.

The GTX 1660 transistor size technology is 2 nm (nanometers) smaller than the RX 580. This means that the GTX 1660 is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the RX 580.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Gainward Ghost OC 6GB requires 130 Watts to run and the Radeon RX 580 8GB requires 150 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the GTX 1660 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the RX 580. The RX 580 requires 20 Watts more than the GTX 1660 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the RX 580 to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GTX 1660.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
The GeForce GTX 1660 Gainward Ghost OC 6GB is an entry to mid-level Nvidia graphics card which launched on March 14th, 2019. The GeForce GTX 1660 is designed to compete against AMD's more affordable gaming cards such as the RX 570 and the RX 580, and replaces the outgoing GTX 1060. The GeForce GTX 1660 Gainward Ghost OC 6GB is a dual-slot graphics card with a dual-fan cooling solution, Expertool II compatibility, and is certified VR-Ready. This graphics card has average overclocking potential.

Architecture
The Turing GPU architecture aims for 30-50% as much performance as the previous-gen Pascal Architecture.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Turing TU116, more specifically the TU166-300-A1, which has 22 SM activated and thus 1408 Shader Processing Units, 88 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1530 MHz and goes up to 1830 MHz with the Boost Clock, providing a small 3% overclock versus the reference model.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 6GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5 through a 192-bit memory interface, while the memory clock Operates at 2001MHz, or 8GHz effective.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 130W, this graphics card requires one 8-pin power connector and a minimum of a 450W power supply.

Performance
The GeForce GTX 1660 will enable medium to high graphics performance on modern AAA 2018 released games. Although there will be variations on this frame rate we expect this card to deliver around 50+ FPS on High graphics settings at 1080p screen resolution.
Comparatively, this card will have slightly faster performance than the GTX 1060.

System Suggestions
The GeForce GTX 1660 Gainward Ghost OC 6GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440, so our recommendation would be to use 1920x1080 in order to get the most out of your settings. We recommend a high-end processor such as the i5-8500 and 12GB of RAM for optimal performance.
Overview
First off we should point out that this is not the new AMD Vega graphics card line. The new AMD Radeon RX 500 series are an uprated version of the RX 400 series that they are replacing. This RX 580 8GB graphics card is one of the two more powerful models from the new AMD Radeon RX 500 Series.

This RX 580 is the 8GB version and there is also the lower VRAM version, RX580 4GB available.

Architecture
It equips a GPU codenamed Polaris 20 XTX, which has 2304 shader processing units, 144 TMUs and 32 ROPs.

GPU
The RX 580 8GB central processing unit runs at 1257MHz and goes up to 1340MHz when in boost and turbo mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 8GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock operates at 2000MHz.

Power Consumption
The RX 580 8GB has a power TDP requirement of 150W. This means it will require at least a 500W PSU with one dedicated 8-pin connector.

Performance
Early benchmarks indicate that the AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB will be similar in performance to the Nvidia GTX 1060 in terms of gaming performance. This puts the RX 580 8GB about 8% faster than the model it replaced, the AMD Radeon RX 480 8GB. Comparing the RX 580 to RX 570 we see 1440p frame rates around 8-15% better with the RX580 version

System Suggestions
The new Radeon RX 580 8GB releases on the 18th April 2017 and is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a high-end processor, like the new Ryzen R5 and at least 8GB of RAM for optimal gaming performance.
