In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Asus ROG Strix A8G Gaming 8GB are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR5.

The GTX 1080 has a 306 MHz higher core clock speed and 40 more Texture Mapping Units than the RTX 2060. This results in the GTX 1080 providing 103.6 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 1080 has a 306 MHz higher core clock speed and 17 more Render Output Units than the RTX 2060. This results in the GTX 1080 providing 42.7 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RTX 2060 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 1080, and so the RTX 2060 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 1080.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GTX 1080 has 2048 MB more video memory than the RTX 2060, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 1080 also has superior memory performance overall.

The GTX 1080 has 176.3 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the RTX 2060, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 1080 is massively better than the RTX 2060.

The GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR5 has 1920 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 1080 Asus ROG Strix A8G Gaming 8GB has 2560. However, the actual shader performance of the RTX 2060 is 3226 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 1080 is 6255. The GTX 1080 having 3029 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 1080 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the RTX 2060.

The RTX 2060 transistor size technology is 4 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 1080. This means that the RTX 2060 is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 1080.

The GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR5 requires 150 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 1080 Asus ROG Strix A8G Gaming 8GB requires 300 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the RTX 2060 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 1080. The GTX 1080 requires 150 Watts more than the RTX 2060 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 1080 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 2060.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR5 is a mid-range GeForce 20 Series graphics card and considered a great price to performance graphics card based on the Turing architecture. Architecture The Turing architecture represents a process shrink down to 12nm compared to 14nm Pascal. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. The GeForce RTX 2060 does support real-time ray-tracing and excels at 1080p screen resolution. GPU It equips a Turing GPU codenamed TU106 which has 1920 Shader Processing Units, 120 TMUs and 47 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1365 MHz and goes up to 1680 MHz, in Boost mode. Memory The GPU accesses a 6GB frame buffer of slower GDDR5 memory compared to the GDDR6 model, running through a 192-bit memory interface, while the Memory clock operates at 1500MHz, or 14GHz effective. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 150W, it requires at least a 450W PSU with an 8-pin power connector. System Suggestions GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR5 is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a mid-range Processor and at least 16GB of RAM for optimal performance.Overview
