In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) are massively better than the Nvidia Quadro NVS 315.

The HD 8740 has a 257 MHz higher core clock speed and 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the Quadro NVS 315. This results in the HD 8740 providing 21.3 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 8740 has a 257 MHz higher core clock speed and 12 more Render Output Units than the Quadro NVS 315. This results in the HD 8740 providing 10.6 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 8740 was released less than a year after the Quadro NVS 315, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The HD 8740 has 1024 MB more video memory than the Quadro NVS 315, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 8740 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 8740 has 58 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Quadro NVS 315, which means that the memory performance of the HD 8740 is much better than the Quadro NVS 315.

The Quadro NVS 315 has 48 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512. However, the actual shader performance of the Quadro NVS 315 is 26 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348. The HD 8740 having 322 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 8740 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Quadro NVS 315.

The HD 8740 transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Quadro NVS 315. This means that the HD 8740 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Quadro NVS 315.

The Quadro NVS 315 requires 20 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the Quadro NVS 315. The HD 8740 requires 35 Watts more than the Quadro NVS 315 to run. The difference is significant enough that the HD 8740 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Quadro NVS 315.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewQuadro NVS 315 is a professional Graphics Card certified for professional applications.
Its drivers are not optimized for gaming purposes but rather for the use of professional applications. Its core, the Fermi GF119-825-A1, is used on the GeForce 510 and therefore its performance is comparable but only slightly better, due to not benefiting from the gaming optimizations the GeForce 510 does. The Quadro NVS 315 is now an old, low-end graphics cards and will struggle to run most modern games.
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
