In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon RX 540X 2GB Mobile are massively better than the AMD Radeon HD 8850M.

The RX 540X has a 499 MHz higher core clock speed but 8 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the Radeon HD 8850M. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the RX 540X manages to provide 11 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The RX 540X has a 499 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 8850M and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the RX 540X providing 8 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RX 540X was released over three years more recently than the Radeon HD 8850M, and so the RX 540X is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Radeon HD 8850M when running the latest games.

The Radeon RX 540X 2GB Mobile and the Radeon HD 8850M have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The Radeon HD 8850M has 32 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the RX 540X, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is noticeably better than the RX 540X.

The Radeon RX 540X 2GB Mobile has 512 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8850M has 640. However, the actual shader performance of the RX 540X is 624 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is 496. The RX 540X having 128 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the RX 540X delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon HD 8850M.

The RX 540X transistor size technology is 14 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Radeon HD 8850M. This means that the RX 540X is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Radeon HD 8850M.

The Radeon RX 540X 2GB Mobile requires 50 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8850M requires 45 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the RX 540X. The RX 540X requires 5 Watts more than the Radeon HD 8850M to run. The difference is not significant enough for the RX 540X to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 8850M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
The new AMD Radeon RX 500X series are an OEM version of the current RX 500 series. The Radeon RX 540X 2GB Mobile is a Low to Middle-Class laptop Graphics Card based on the 4th Generation of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture. The specs of the Radeon RX 500X series graphics cards are identical to the standard Radeon RX 500 series.

It equips a GPU Codenamed Lexa Pro which has 14 Compute Units activated and thus 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs.

The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of Fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 1500MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 50W, it requires at least a 350W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for Power, meaning no Extra Connectors are required.

This graphics card was designed and marketed towards the competitive MOBA gamers with laptops. A light weight, small form factor GPU solution that offers mobility. The Radeon RX 54X0 4GB Mobile can play most modern games at medium graphics selection on a 900p screen res and expect around 45+FPS. Performance is exactly the same as the Radeon RX 540.

System Suggestions
Radeon RX 540 2GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Performance Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
Radeon HD 8850M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture.

The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology.

It equips a GPU codenamed Venus PRO which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 625MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode.

The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1000MHz.

DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops.

Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above NVIDIA's GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8850M.
