In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon RX 540 4GB Mobile are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M 2GB.

The RX 540 has a 210 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 950M, but the GTX 950M has 8 more Texture Mapping Units than the RX 540. As a result, the GTX 950M exhibits a 0.6 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the RX 540. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The RX 540 has a 210 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 950M and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the RX 540 providing 3.4 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RX 540 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 950M, and so the RX 540 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 950M.

The RX 540 has 2048 MB more video memory than the GTX 950M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, the overall memory performance is about the same.

The GTX 950M has 80 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the RX 540, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 950M is much better than the RX 540.

The Radeon RX 540 4GB Mobile has 512 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 950M 2GB has 640. However, the actual shader performance of the RX 540 is 624 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 950M is 858. The GTX 950M having 234 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 950M delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the RX 540.

The RX 540 transistor size technology is 14 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 950M. This means that the RX 540 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 950M.

The Radeon RX 540 4GB Mobile requires 50 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 950M 2GB requires 50 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the RX 540. The two GPUs require the same amount of wattage to run. As such, there is no need to worry about which will more significantly affect your yearly electricity bills.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
The Radeon RX 540 4GB Mobile is a Low to Middle-Class laptop Graphics Card based on the 4th Generation of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

It equips a GPU Codenamed Lexa Pro which has 14 Compute Units activated and thus 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs.

The GPU accesses a 4GB frame buffer of Fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 1500MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 50W, it requires at least a 350W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for Power, meaning no Extra Connectors are required.

This graphics card was designed and marketed towards the competitive MOBA gamers with laptops. A light weight, small form factor GPU solution that offers mobility. The Radeon RX 540 4GB Mobile can play most modern games at medium graphics selection on a 1080p screen res and expect around 45+FPS.

System Suggestions
Radeon RX 540 4GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Performance Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
GeForce GTX 950M 2GB is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the first variant of the Maxwell architecture.

The first variant of the Maxwell Architecture succeeds the Kepler Architecture. Despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, it has an extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

It equips a GPU codenamed GM107-N16P-GT which has 5 SM activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The central unit runs at 914MHz and goes up to 993MHz, in Turbo Mode.

The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The memory clock operates at 1253MHz. The size of the frame buffer is adequate.

DirectX 12 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GameStream, G-SYNC, GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 50W, it may be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Because GeForce GTX 950M 2GB is just a higher clocked GeForce GTX 850M v2 2GB, its performance is only about 5% faster than its predecessors and so GeForce GTX 860M 2GB is still faster.
Still, it still offers decent gaming at 1920x1080 and most modern games should run fluently at high settings.

System Suggestions
We recommend a strong processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce GTX 950M 2GB.
