In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 480M are significantly better than the Nvidia Quadro FX 3700M.

The GeForce GTX 480M was released over a year more recently than the Quadro FX 3700M, and so the GeForce GTX 480M is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the Quadro FX 3700M.

The GeForce GTX 480M has 1024 MB more video memory than the Quadro FX 3700M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GeForce GTX 480M also has superior memory performance overall.

The GeForce GTX 480M has 25.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Quadro FX 3700M, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce GTX 480M is slightly better than the Quadro FX 3700M.

The GeForce GTX 480M has 352 Shader Processing Units and the Quadro FX 3700M has 128. However, the actual shader performance of the GeForce GTX 480M is 299 and the actual shader performance of the Quadro FX 3700M is 70. The GeForce GTX 480M having 229 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GeForce GTX 480M delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Quadro FX 3700M.

The GeForce GTX 480M transistor size technology is 25 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Quadro FX 3700M. This means that the GeForce GTX 480M is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Quadro FX 3700M.

The GeForce GTX 480M requires 100 Watts to run and the Quadro FX 3700M requires 75 Watts. The GeForce GTX 480M requires 25 Watts more than the Quadro FX 3700M to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GeForce GTX 480M to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Quadro FX 3700M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce GTX 480M is a High-End Mobile Graphics Card based on the first revision of the Fermi Architecture.

Architecture
The Fermi Architecture was first manufactured with a 40nm technology and uses a technique known as Hot Clocking: The Shaders are clocked twice as fast as the Central Unit. While this leads to a reasonable performance boost, it causes enormous amounts of energy dissipation, leading, ultimately, to a significantly higher operating temperature.
Fermi is also the first GPU architecture with fully cached memory access which increases memory performance.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Fermi GF100-N11E-GTX-A3 which has 11 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 352 Shader Processing Units, 44 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 425MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 600MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for SLI, Optimus, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX, Realtime Raytracing and other technologies

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 100W, it is only suited for very large laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance identical to a desktop GeForce GTS 450.

System Suggestions
We recommend a fast processor (Intel Core i7 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 480M.
The Quadro® FX 3700M high-end mobile workstation graphics solution with its revolutionary unified architecture, delivers 1 GB memory, excellent image quality, and optimized visual computing application performance pushing the limits of a 17" mobile workstation.
