In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT are marginally better than the AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5730.

The Radeon HD was released over a year more recently than the GeForce 9800M GT, and so the Radeon HD is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GeForce 9800M GT.

The Radeon HD has 512 MB more video memory than the GeForce 9800M GT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, overall, the GeForce 9800M GT has superior memory performance.

The GeForce 9800M GT has 25.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 9800M GT is slightly better than the Radeon HD.

The Mobility Radeon HD 5730 has 400 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 9800M GT has 96. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD is 130 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 9800M GT is 120. The Radeon HD having 10 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the GeForce 9800M GT performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The Radeon HD transistor size technology is 25 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GeForce 9800M GT. This means that the Radeon HD is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GeForce 9800M GT. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the Radeon HD should consume less power than the GeForce 9800M GT.

The Mobility Radeon HD 5730 requires 26 Watts to run and the GeForce 9800M GT requires 65 Watts. The GeForce 9800M GT requires 39 Watts more than the Radeon HD to run. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce 9800M GT may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewMobility Radeon HD 5730 is a fast-middle-class GPU based on the 40nm, Terascale 2 architecture.
It's based on the Madison Core and offers 400 Shader Processing Units, 20 TMUs and 6 ROPs, on 128-bit memory interface of standard GDDR3. The central unit runs at 650MHz and the memory clock operates at up to 800MHz. It consumes no more than 26 Watt.
Benchmarks indicate most modern demanding games of 2007-2010, such as Crysis, BF2 and Metro 2033 were playable at medium settings smoothly. Therefore, today's modern demanding games should be playable on the medium preset, using a 720p resolution, though extremely demanding modern games such as Crysis 3 might require further reduced settings.
Mobility Radeon HD 5730 is identical to Mobility Radeon HD 5770 but comes equipped with standard GDDR3 instead of fast GDDR5. Therefore, it performs much worse in higher resolutions (720p+) when compared to Mobility Radeon HD 5770. However, in modest resolutions (1024x768 ..), both cards should perform similar. Its performance is also expected to be better than Mobility Radeon HD 5750 in modest resolutions. It consumes more power due to the higher core-clock speed and because GDDR5 is more energy efficient than GDDR3.
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GT GPUs deliver optimized performance for immersive gaming on-the-go. Powering the next generation of visual computing, blazing-fast mobile gaming, and the ultimate HD experience with PureVideo HD technology. This product is also enabled for CUDA applications and is NVIDIA PhysX-ready.
