In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia Riva TNT2 Pro are massively better than the AMD Radeon RX 490 8GB.

The RX 490 was released over three years more recently than the Riva TNT2 Pro, and so the RX 490 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Riva TNT2 Pro when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.

The RX 490 has 8160 MB more video memory than the Riva TNT2 Pro, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the RX 490 also has superior memory performance overall.

The RX 490 has 1021.3 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Riva TNT2 Pro, which means that the memory performance of the RX 490 is massively better than the Riva TNT2 Pro.

The Radeon RX 490 8GB has 4096 Shader Processing Units and the Riva TNT2 Pro has 2. However, the actual shader performance of the RX 490 is 4301 and the actual shader performance of the Riva TNT2 Pro is 0. The RX 490 having 4301 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the RX 490 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Riva TNT2 Pro.

The Radeon RX 490 8GB requires 225 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Riva TNT2 Pro. We would recommend a PSU with at least 550 Watts for the RX 490.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon RX 490 8GB is an upcoming high-end performance Graphics Card based on the Third Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
N/A.

GPU
N/A.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 8GB frame buffer of Second Generation HBM, through a 8192-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 500MHz.

Power Consumption
As a dual slot graphics card this should be in the region of 225W

Performance
The RX 490 will be capable of running 2016 released AAA games on High-Ultra graphics settings using a 1440p resolution. In some cases it will also be capable of running a number of modern games at 4K resolution with a reliable frame rate at High graphics settings

System Suggestions
Radeon RX 490 8GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a High-End Processor and 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
The RIVA TNT2 was a graphics processing unit manufactured by Nvidia starting in early 1999. The chip is codenamed "NV5" because it is the 5th graphics chip design by Nvidia, succeeding the RIVA TNT (NV4). RIVA is an acronym for Real-time Interactive Video and Animation accelerator. The "TNT" suffix refers to the chip's ability to work on two texels at once (TwiN Texel). Nvidia removed RIVA from the name later in the chip's lifetime.
