In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980MX 8GB are massively better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M.
The GTX 980MX has a 227 MHz higher core clock speed and 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce GTX 770M. This results in the GTX 980MX providing 43.1 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The GTX 980MX has a 227 MHz higher core clock speed and 40 more Render Output Units than the GeForce GTX 770M. This results in the GTX 980MX providing 46.9 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The GTX 980MX was released over three years more recently than the GeForce GTX 770M, and so the GTX 980MX is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GeForce GTX 770M when running the latest games.
The GTX 980MX has 5120 MB more video memory than the GeForce GTX 770M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 980MX also has superior memory performance overall.
The GTX 980MX has 64.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce GTX 770M, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 980MX is much better than the GeForce GTX 770M.
The GeForce GTX 980MX 8GB has 1664 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 770M has 960. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 980MX is 2534 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce GTX 770M is 779. The GTX 980MX having 1755 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 980MX delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce GTX 770M.
The GeForce GTX 980MX 8GB requires 122 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 770M requires 75 Watts. The GTX 980MX requires 47 Watts more than the GeForce GTX 770M to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 980MX may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GeForce GTX 770M.

Mini Review | Overview GeForce GTX 980MX 8GB is a High-End Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture. Architecture GeForce GTX 980MX 8GB Features a GPU Codenamed GM204-??? which is a Second Gen Maxwell GPU and is identical to the GM204-200-A1 used on the Desktop GeForce GTX 970. It has 13 Stream Multiprocessors activated and offers 1664 Shader Processing Units, 104 TMUs and 64 ROPs. GPU The central unit runs at ????MHz and goes up to ????MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory: Speed The GPU is equipped with fast GDDR5 and Accesses the Frame Buffer through a 256-bit Memory Interface. The Memory Clock Operates at 1250MHz. Memory: Frame Buffer The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 8GB. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 122W, it may only be used on Very Large Notebooks. Performance Product Not Released Yet. System Suggestions GeForce GTX 980MX 8GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a High-End Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance. | Overview GeForce GTX 770M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the first revision of the Kepler Architecture. Architecture The Kepler Architecture was NVIDIA's big step to power efficiency. Each Stream Multiprocessor (SMX) now hosts 192 Shader Processing Units - against the 48 of older Fermi Architecture, and has been redesigned being now clocked at the same speed of the Central Unit. This means they are more energy efficient and will consequently lead to cooler operating temperatures. However, it also means they are weaker. It can be said that one Fermi SMX is as fast as 2 Kepler SMXs. Additionally, and not available in all GPUs, Kepler also introduced the Boost Clock Feature. The Boost Clock is an even higher Clock Speed activated when in gaming mode and becomes the effective speed of the GPU. GPU It equips a GPU Codenamed Kepler GK106-N14E-GS-A1 which has 5 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 960 Shader Processing Units, 80 TMUs and 24 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 811MHz. Memory The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 192-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and no way benefits the GPU. The Memory Clock Operates at 1002MHz. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for SLI, Kepler Boost, Optimus, CUDA, OpenCL, DirectCompute, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX, Realtime Raytracing and other technologies Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 75W, it is suited for large laptops. Performance GeForce GTX 770M is essentially a fast GeForce GTX 675MX. Gaming benchmarks indicate its performance is slightly better than the older GeForce GTX 675MX. System Suggestions We recommend a Powerful Processor (Intel Core i7 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 770M. |
